About the Author

Michael Sullivan, Emeritus Professor of Mathematics at Chicago State University, received a Ph.D. in mathematics from the Illinois Institute of Technology. Mike taught at Chicago State for 35 years before recently retiring. He is a native of Chicago’s South Side and divides his time between Oak Lawn, Illinois, and Naples, Florida.

�

Mike is a member of the American Mathematical Society and the Mathematical Association of America. He is a past president of the Text and Academic Authors Association and is currently Treasurer of its Foundation. He is a member of the TAA Council of Fellows, and was awarded the TAA Mike Keedy award in 1997 and the Lifetime Achievement Award in 2007. In addition, he represents TAA on the Authors Coalition of America.

Mike has been writing textbooks for more than 35 years and currently has 15 books in print, 12 with Pearson Education. When not writing, he enjoys tennis, golf, gardening, and travel.

�

Mike has four children: Kathleen teaches college mathematics; Michael III teaches college mathematics and is his co-author on two precalculus series; Dan works in publishing; and Colleen teaches middle school and secondary school mathematics. Twelve grandchildren round out the family.

�

Mike Sullivan III is a professor of mathematics at Joliet Junior College. He holds graduate degrees from DePaul University in both mathematics and economics. Mike is an author or co-author on more than 20 books, including a statistics book and a developmental mathematics series. Mike is the father of three children and an avid golfer, who tries to spend as much of his limited free time as possible on the golf course.

AP World History Book Review

This book tells a magnificent story of how a small good seen everyday, chocolate, has impacted all of history. To my surprise, it was loaded with lots of data and history you would never imagine for such a common item. The authors did a superb job in presenting a subject not thought about throughout the modern world. The origins of chocolate have a very interesting history that is again, not considered in the modern era. The author delivers their information in an interesting way and makes readers want to continue to read due to its surplus of interesting and unknown facts.

I would recommend this book to other students because it tells a fascinating story of a boring item. Students can learn many things from this novel such as the impact of trade or interactions between humans. They can also see the effects of cultural diffusion from different goods in the world. The only thing I had wished the author had done was add more personal thoughts or opinions on their information to give students something to discuss about.

Simply amazing read.

A fascinating and fact-filled account of the history of chocolate from its Mayan origins to its reception in Europe during the early 1500s, the changing nature of its production and marketing to the present day and the major players in this - religiously, socially and culturally. This is such an engaging and interesting read. Filled with information about early Meso-America and an unflinching portrait of the Conquistadors and their role in the later dissemination of chocolate, never mind the cultural atrocities perpetrated on the people they encountered in South America, the book then travels to Europe and the reader learns of the role this rich and heady drink played among first, the cultural elite, before finding its way to the stomachs and hearts of the masses. The role of slavery is touched upon and my only critique is I would have liked to read more on this. Otherwise, this book is the seminal book on the history of the product we've come to know and mostly, love devouring.

Vincent Zhuang has been working in web GIS as a senior software architect, GIS analyst, and GIS specialist for more than nine years. He is a GIS lead at the Science Application International Corporation (SAIC) in Falls Church, Virginia. He started EnviroMapper in 1997�the enterprise-wide web GIS tool for the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)�and continuously led the development of the EnviroMapper suite of tools for the EPA from 1998 to 2004. He holds a Master�s degree and Ph.D. in Remote Sensing and GIS from Purdue University at West Lafayette, Indiana. Dr.Zhuang has served as a professional journal reviewer for the International Journal of Remote Sensing since 1993.

David R. Wrazien has more than 20 years of experience in the GIS industry and is currently employed as a Senior Solution Architect at Environmental Systems Research Institute (ESRI) of Redlands, California. He has worked with industry leaders to deliver server-based enterprise GIS capabilities to core IT platforms and applications. Mr.Wrazien received his Bachelor�s degree from the University of Delaware and his Master�s degree from the University of Wyoming.

Minhua Wang is a system architect, data modeler, and GIS developer with more than 18 years of experience in the IT and GIS industries, including extensive experience with ArcGIS. He is currently a technical architect for GeoDecisions, a GIS/IT consulting company. Dr. Wang holds a Ph.D. in GIS from the University of Waterloo, Canada.

Very basic overview of the subject

If you already have *any* experience in programming asp.net then you can disregard over half of this book. Three out of nine chapters deal only with asp.net code that you can pick up from any book and many websites.

Chapter 3: Programming in Visual Basic .NET

Chapter 5: Web Forms, Web Controls, and Web Templates

As for the ArcGIS Server parts of this book, the only topics they cover are using basic templates that ESRI provides in its Developer's help. One of their examples comes straight from ESRI documentation.

You can teach yourself a ton more just by exploring the forums on ESRI's website, the developer help, and playing with the sample web apps that come with the software.

Don't waste your money on this book. In fact, if you are an EDN subscriber (ESRI Developer's Network) then you will get an electronic copy of a book that is over 700 pages long that will cover everything in this book and tons more.

Decent, but out of date

The book is okay. It's a good intro with some good ASP examples for newbies. The sad part is that much of it relates to ArcGIS Server 9.1 and 9.2 is drastically different. It needs to be updated by the authors, to truly be helpful.

Overpriced and obsolete

Others here have provided more in depth reviews of this book. I'll just add my two cents and say this book was horribly written and way overpriced when it was published in 2005. Six or seven years later it's not even relevant anymore and obsolete. Save your money for an EDN license and browse ESRI's free online references.

A Method for Making Spectacular & Realistic Models

I have been interested in making my models more attractive, more realistic and more historically accurate since I returned to the hobby recently. In pursuit of that goal, I have purchased quite a number of modeling books over the last year or so. Some are decades old while others are new. I have picked up tips from all of them and my projects have slowly improved.

In the description of TANKART 2 by Michael Rinaldi on Amazon I thought I saw potential to sort out the mental morass I had developed, to provide a system to get from raw plastic parts in a box to a finished model that is a vivid representation of a real machine fixed in a specific time & place. This book lays out a system to do just that. The author is a wonderful builder, but even more important, he is a graphic designer and thinks the whole process through with a specific end goal in mind.

There are beginning chapters on general topics such as materials & techniques that give an overview of these subjects. From the general the author takes us through specific applications by showing how he builds a number of models selected to show different modeling aspects. Combining the general with the specific clearly illustrates the process to achieve the goals outlined for each project.

After reading some of these I feel I have a firmer grasp on the overall process of taking that box of parts and converting it to a work of modeling art. Now I'm busting to try some of these techniques in the system Rinaldi laid out. The most important part to me is the thought process of using layered steps to create an overall effect.

Being a designer, Rinaldi also laid the book out in an attractive, informative & logical manner. The pictures are large, well photographed and have circles that lead the eye to the specific feature that are mentioned in the captions. TANKART 2 raises the bar for all such publications & I highly recommend it!
