Paradise Island is a thriller set in modern day sub-Saharan Africa. The key protagonists are Candice Cain, a US photo-journalist; Carlos da Gama, the editor of a highly influential Mozambiquan newspaper and Courtney Regal, the owner and operator of a multi-national conglomerate with a South African heritage. The story opens with a dramatic, violent scene from Carlos’ early childhood, forty years before, in Angola and rapidly advances to Paradise Island, a semi-fictitious locale on the east coast of Mozambique.
Candice takes on an assignment to complete a photo essay on the effects of landmines on Paradise Island, a former holiday resort mined during the civil war in Mozambique. Candice has a tortured past – the only child of a professional soldier her father has brought her up like the son he never had, schooling her in all aspects of self-protection and the martial arts. At the time of the story Candice is building a reputation as a press photographer who exposes the dark side. She is still developing and has yet to come to terms with herself, especially her violent side.
Candice soon realizes that there is something sinister developing on the island when she fights off a gang of thugs who have been sent to kill her. During a series of fast escalating events, she meets Carlos da Gama, an investigative journalist who has come to Paradise Island to expose the situation.
Carlos was a charismatic student activist who was involved in the anti-apartheid at Wits University in Johannesburg in the seventies. Carlos was eventually deported by the South African security police and gained an international reputation as an outstanding journalist. Carlos is a brilliant orator, incredibly charismatic and without fear.
Candice and Carlos fall in love. They realize that a massive oil field is being developed which will inevitably destroy the marine reserve of the Paradise Archipelago, but that this finding pales into insignificance as they fight for their lives as they try to stop a revolution, masterminded by Courtney Regal, which is engulfing South Africa and its neighbouring states. Regal needs to eliminate Carlos and Candice if he is to succeed in his objective of gaining total economic and political control of the gigantic oil fields he has discovered.
The novel revolves around the uncertain future that faces sub-Saharan Africa in the new millennium as a result of corruption and the unscrupulous activities of big business. The novel reflects the underlying reality of modern day Africa – the continent may be an exciting place to live, but the subtext of violence, uncertainty and political opportunism is always present.

Poor grammar and spelling
By Johan van Eeden
Many spelling errors and poor grammar distract from what could have been a reasonably good story. It is really irritating to read a book that was so poorly edited. The plot seems to meander too much as well and leaves one wondering where the chapters have left off and if the story is progressing towards any conclusion. As for shooting a rocket from inside a flying helicopter shows that the author has absolutely no idea of what he is talking about and has no knowledge about modern weaponry. Pity I wasted my money on this book. My advice, get a better editor and write a believable story and do your research thoroughly before your next book.

This book is spoilt by dozens of spelling and grammar mistakes. This story is a "scary" scenario for what could happen in the Southern part of Africa should a deranged billionaire decide he wants his own little "kingdom" at any cost. Its not for the squeamish as Sherlock highlights the brutality people will go to for power and money. He also highlights the single biggest problem that Africa has for progress - corruption. I enjoyed the story and the accurate references to locations and situations in this part of Africa. As I said, the story is spoilt by countless spelling and grammar errors and I have to ask - Who Is Doing The Proof Reading?

Good yarn but terrible editing and kindle formatting
By Amazon Customer
Plot is entertaining enough for its genre, a reasonable vacation 'beach read', but this book REALLY needs an editor, constant spelling and grammatical mistakes really detract from the enjoyment. The formatting for kindle reading is also beyond terrible, sometimes it feels like scenes change mid paragraph necessitating and immediate context reset which gets tiring. Please hire a professional editor and get this cleaned up.
