It advocates a strategic approach through which an institution sets clear goals and metrics and integrates the identity support work of cultural / diversity centers with skill building through cohort activities, enabling students to successfully navigate college, graduate on time and transition to the world of work. Underlying the process is an intersectional and identity-conscious, rather than identity-centered, framework that addresses the complexity of students’ assets and needs as they encounter the unfamiliar terrain of college.

In the current landscape of higher education, colleges and universities normally divide their efforts between departments and programs that explicitly work on developing students’ identities and separate departments or programs that work on retaining and graduating higher-risk students. This book contends that the gap between cultural/diversity centers and institutional retention efforts is both a missed opportunity and one that perpetuates the opportunity gap between students of color and low-income students and their peers.

Identity-consciousness, the central framework of this book, differs from an identity-centric approach where the identity itself is the focus of the intervention. For example, a Latino men’s program can be developed as an identity-centered initiative if the outcomes of the program are all tied to a deeper or more complex understanding of one’s Latino-ness and/or masculinity. Alternately, this same program can be an identity-conscious student success program if it is designed from the ground up with the students’ racial and gender identities in mind, but the intended outcomes are tied to student success, such as term-to-term credit completion, yearly persistence, engagement in high-impact practices, or timely graduation.

Following the introductory chapter focused on framing how we understand risk and success in the academy, the remaining chapters present programmatic interventions that have been tested and found effective for students of color, working class college students, and first-generation students. Each chapter opens with a student story to frame the problem, outlines the key research that informs the program, and offers sufficient descriptive information for staff or faculty considering implementing a similar identity-conscious intervention on their campus. The chapters conclude with a discussion of assessment, and suggested “Action Items” as starting points.

About the Author
Vijay Pendakur Dr. Vijay Pendakur serves as an Associate Vice President for Student Affairs at California State University – Fullerton. Prior to joining Cal State Fullerton, Dr. Pendakur served as the Director for the Office of Multicultural Student Success, a department charged with increasing the retention and persistence of low-income students, first generation students, and students of color at DePaul University in Chicago. He holds a bachelor's degree in history and East Asian studies from the University of Wisconsin, Madison, a master's degree in U.S. history from the University of California, San Diego, and a doctorate in education from DePaul University.

Shaun R. Harper is on the faculty in the Graduate School of Education, Africana Studies, and Gender Studies at the University of Pennsylvania, where he also serves as director of the Center for the Study of Race and Equity in Education. He is co�founder of the Penn GSE Black Male Grad Prep Academy, an initiative that prepares undergraduate men for doctoral study in education fields.

Professor Harper maintains an active research agenda that examines race and gender in higher education, Black male college access and achievement, and college student engagement. He is author of over 80 peer-�reviewed journal articles and other academic publications. His 10 books include: Student Engagement in Higher Education (2009, 2014), College Men and Masculinities (2010), and the 5th edition of Student Services: A Handbook for the Profession (2011).

He is co-editor of the Stylus Engaged Research and Practice for Social Justice in Education series; editor-in-chief of the Routledge book series on Race and Racism in U.S. Higher Education; and associate editor of Educational Researcher, a journal of the American Educational Research Association (AERA).

Dr. Harper is principal investigator of the New York City Black and Latino Male High School Achievement Study, a project that entailed individual interviews with 415 young men of color from 40 public high schools. Several associations have praised his scholarship, including the Association for the Study of Higher Education (2008 Early Career Award), AERA (2010 Early Career Award), and the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators (2012 Robert H. Shaffer Award for Faculty Excellence).

Writers should read Father Abraham

Early Faulkner is very different from the later Faulkner, particularly where he perfected his stream-of-consciousness style. But ALL Faulkner is worth reading. "Father Abraham" seems a test-run for some of his ideas about the Snopes family and, as such, is particularly valuable for writers to be able to see big ideas in early phase, to be measured against the finished products.

Why read this early unpublished work?

Father Abraham, is basically an unpublished first attempt at the famous "Spotted Horses" story and Snopes saga, sort of an ​ur-​Hamlet. It's described in the Introduction as "Not a fragment, not quite a finished work, Father Abraham is the brilliant beginning of a novel which William Faulkner tried repeatedly to write, for a period of almost a decade and a half, during the earlier part of his career..."

Why read Father Abraham? First it's a ripping good yarn and a wonderful compact version of all that we love about Faulkner. The action of the story takes place over a single April day of the horse auction, and is mostly told in dialogue, in the various idioms the participants from laconic hardscrabble to big talkin' Texan. In this, of course Faulker was the master without peer, and the result is a wonderful story that you imagine will be told in county's stores, barber shops, and bars down through the years. But Faulkner was also one of the best in describing the natural world, and here he lards the story, punctuating the action with beautiful descriptions of the progressing arc of the day:

He yawned at the red and hill-nicked rim of the sun. About him the world waked fresh beneath the spring dawn, waked happily chill, as though not fully reassured . . .

the sun heaved up like a captive balloon from beyond the ultimate horizon . . .

Above the bowl of the sky hushed itself into mysterious ineffable azures . . .

Evening was completely accomplished. The sparrows are gone, and the final cloud of swallow had swirled into a chimney somewhere and the ultimate celestial edges of the world rolled on into vague and intricate subtleties of softest pearl...

And yet it was not quite night. The west was green tall and without depth, like a pane of glass; through it a substance that was not light seeped in sourceless diffusion, like the sound of an organ.

Secondly, obvious reason is that as a fan of one of his greatest and (perhaps more importantly) readable novels, it is a chance at a glimpse at Faulkner at the very beginning as his career as a novelist and "Sole Proprietor" of Yoknapatawpha (love that my spellchecker has that) County. Snopes family and the so-called "rise of the redneck" theme that dominated much of is writing in the 40s and 50s was in his thinking as early as 1926, while he was also writing his first Yoknapatawpha novel, Flags in the Dust:

''The Snopes sprang untarnished from a long line of shiftless tenant farmers - a race that is of the land and yet rootless, like mistletoe; owing nothing to the soil, giving nothing to it and getting nothing of it in return; using the land as a harlot instead of an imperious yet abundant mistress, passing on to another farm. Cunning and dull and clannish, they move and halt and move and multiply and marry and multiply like rabbits: magnify them and you have political hangers-on and professional officeholders and Prohibition officers; reduce the perspective and you have mold on cheese.''
The title is ironic, but the explanation comes also from Flags in the Dust:
Flem the first Snopes had appeared unheralded one day and without making a ripple in the town's life, behind the counter of a small restaurant on a side street, patronized by country people. With this foothold and like Abraham of old, he led his family piece by piece into town.

It is also interesting to compare this with the final version of the "Spotted Horses" story that makes its way into The Hamlet. While the story is identical and the dialogue are almost verbatim, there is a big difference in tone. By the time of the The Hamlet, Faulkner has saturated the story with what Cleanth Brooks calls "distancing" elements, language with which he elevates the Snopes story to a mythic level that is absent here beyond the first page and a half. The result is less mythic. more Twain. Also Faulkner end the store before (or hasn't conceived) the successive trial scene that casts Flem in a much darker light than just the Trickster.

Finally, the book itself is beautiful and a joy to read enhanced by lovely complementing woodcuts by John DePol. For this reason I recommend tracking down one of the hardback copies.

[In an intersting footnote, the 26 page manuscript survived for 30 years lost in the archives of the New York Public Library's Arents Collection, which was endowed by cigarette-manufacturing magnate to collect any containing even the most obscure or limited references to tobacco. The manuscript was bought by the library in 1953 because early in the story, there is a sentence that reads: ''He chews tobacco constantly and steadily and slowly, and no one ever saw his eyelids closed.'' That mention alone led to the purchase of the Faulkner short story by the library for $300 in 1953.]

Content is worth it.

I normally don't write reviews this often but, This book is definitely helpful and while I order the hard cover edition. I really enjoy how this product is presented. I haven't read through yet but I heard many good things about Ron Tiner, A fellow artist who's in the industry recommended me this book. I'm on the side of the technical artist and I'm not usually good at drawing from mind but always need photo reference to get started and boost my ideas.

I recommend to check this book out. The knowledge and content is invaluable for those who are an artist with a weak imagination. Aleast thats what I consider myself.

Book, worthy of note.

Not exactly what I expected, but a interesting book nonetheless.

I especially enjoyed the first half of the book(and it was the reason I got it).
This is not a clean cut "how to" book, this is not a beginner's book either.

It is general guide, from the viewpoint of a veteran British illustrator, for those who already know how to handle a pencil.

As I said before, an interesting book.

The book came in three days. It was a little more worn than I expected and had price scans and cards being used for the library, but everything was readable and over all i like the book.

About the Author

Sara Davis Powell has been a teacher all her life, first with her stuffed animals, and then with students in elementary, middle, and high schools, followed by college undergraduate and graduate students. She currently is Professor and Chair of the Department of Education at Belmont Abbey College in North Carolina and is active in the American Educational Research Association, the National Middle School Association, and Kappa Delta Pi. In addition to being a frequent conference speaker and facilitator of professional development for K-12 schools, she has authored many articles and several books including the college text Introduction to Middle School (Pearson, 2e, 2011). Sara is the mother of four grown sons and lives with her husband Rus in a cottage on the Catawba River.

A finalist for both the 1990 Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Critics Circle Award, The Things They Carried marks a subtle but definitive line of demarcation between Tim O'Brien's earlier works about Vietnam, the memoir If I Die in a Combat Zone and the fictional Going After Cacciato, and this sly, almost hallucinatory book that is neither memoir nor novel nor collection of short stories but rather an artful combination of all three. Vietnam is still O'Brien's theme, but in this book he seems less interested in the war itself than in the myriad different perspectives from which he depicts it. Whereas Going After Cacciato played with reality, The Things They Carried plays with truth. The narrator of most of these stories is "Tim"; yet O'Brien freely admits that many of the events he chronicles in this collection never really happened. He never killed a man as "Tim" does in "The Man I Killed," and unlike Tim in "Ambush," he has no daughter named Kathleen. But just because a thing never happened doesn't make it any less true. Tim O'Brien's "The Things They Carried" is a book that transcends the genre of war fiction. Actually, it transcends the genre of fiction in general. Although labeled "a work of fiction" on the title page, the book really combines aspects of memoir, novel, and short story collection. I think you could use Audre Lorde's term "biomythography" to describe this book.
The first-person narrator of this book (named, like the author, Tim O'Brien) is a writer and combat veteran of the Vietnam War. The book actually deals with events before and after the war, in addition to depicting the war itself; the time span covers more than 30 years in the lives of O'Brien and his fellow soldiers.
"The Things They Carried" is an intensely "writerly" text. By that I mean that O'Brien and his characters often reflect directly on the activities of storytelling and writing. As a reader, I got the sense that I was being invited into the very process by which the book was created. This is an extraordinary technique, and O'Brien pulls it off brilliantly.
This being a war story, there are some truly disturbing, graphic, and violent scenes. But there are also scenes that are haunting, funny, surreal, or ironic. O'Brien depicts a memorable group of soldiers: the guilt-wracked Lieut. Cross; Kiowa, a Native American and devout, Bible-carrying Baptist; the sadistic but playful Azar; and more.
While this book is a complete and cohesive work of art, many of its component stories could stand alone as independent pieces of literature (in fact, I first encountered the title story in an anthology). But however you classify it, I consider "The Things They Carried" to be a profoundly moving masterpiece.

A Masterpiece

I was first introduced to this book as part of a U.S. & Vietnam History course in college. The other novel the course required was The Quiet American by Graham Greene. Tim O'Brien's book is every bit as good as Greene's, and all the more timely.
As a former soldier, and a veteran of Desert Storm, whose father avoided the draft during the Vietnam War, the book taught me that no matter what other people say about the war, no matter what I learn, I can never make any value judgements on an individual level. I was not there, and for better or worse, I am only a specator.
I am currently re-reading the book, which I often use in teaching my creative writing class. I share the story-chapter, "Style" every year with my students. I also find the book essential to learn about the nature of fiction, which O'Brien challenges with every page of this book.
For anyone looking for a book to read on the Vietnam experience, this book makes my short list every time. Not only of "Vietnam" books, but of any book worth reading. This book is simply essential.

A Vietnam Primer for a 1969 baby...

I was born in 1969. I missed Vietnam. The war was over and I never knew about it. For an event that had such significance in American history, it was as though it had never happened.
When I was in High School and we studied American History, our class always ended with WWII. We never discussed "modern" events -- the 60s, the Vietnam War, the Civil Rights movement.
When I got to college, I made a point of taking a class on the 60s. Still though, I gained a textbook introduction to the Vietnam war -- I never had a true sense of what the horror was, why people protested, why it was such an important historical event. My generation has never faced a war in which we were drafted to fight.
And then I read "The Things they Carried"...
This book was/is an education for me. Visceral, haunting, provoking, gripping -- the stories Tim O'Brien tells rip into you. He puts you on the front line facing the man you just killed -- on the Canadian border deciding that you aren't brave enough to escape to Canada to avoid the draft -- back in Vietnam watching your best buddy slowly sink into a field of mud as sniper fire rains all around you -- back at home with no sense of purpose surrounded by people who don't know how to welcome you home.
This book is the best education on Vietnam this literal child of the 60s ever received.

The bible of pediatric orthopedics

If you are wanting to know more about pediatric orthopedics this is definitely the book to get. It has more information than any other source I looked at (and I looked at a lot!) and the information is straightforward. It's not the newest book out there, but it's fantastic.
