Phil Gordon is back, and in better shape than ever

In my opinion, Phil Gordon is the best poker writer out there. He writes in a straightforward, clear language, which is really easy to follow. I've read all his previous three books and also his DVD, and I was really afraid that he had given up writing, since his previous book was released five years ago. I am glad to say that Phil Gordon is back, and in better shape than ever.

In his private life, Gordon had gone through a quest of improving his own game, since poker players have evolved quite drastically in the past few years. And it is rare to see a poker expert publicly admitting that he had to step back and re-study the game. The Gold Book is the result of this quest.

The book starts with lots of math that will make the head of most readers to spin. But don't give up. Soon enough things will get clear as the author shows tools and techniques that will for sure improve your game. While some of them were already featured in the author's previous books (such as the "squeeze" play, a.k.a. "fish'n'chips"), this time he explains more in depth the math behind them.

This is a book that you will have to re-read several times to be able to get everything it has to offer, especially as your game improves. In the end, it will make you to completely re-think your game. And that is why this book is so good.

The only "negatives" I can see with this book is that this time the author didn't put a lot of jokes in the text. You see, the typical Gordon jokes inserted inside the book (e.g. "feeling like the time I had bad shellfish in an all-you-can-eat buffet in Kansas City") help me to memorize the concept he is explaining. Also, even though there is a chapter with some hand examples, I'd prefer to have some real examples after each concept is explained. He did that here and there, but I wanted to see more! I hope Phil Gordon writes a follow-up book only with real hand examples, just like he did with his Blue Book.

On a more serious subject, for a book released after "Black Friday" and the demise of Full Tilt Poker, I think the author should have re-vamped the parts he talks about online poker and Full Tilt in particular. For example, he mentions that Chris Ferguson was able to create a $126,000 bankroll starting from zero and that Phil Galfond also has accumulated an on-line bankroll of same magnitude, but didn't say anything about what happened to player's online bankroll after "Black Friday."

BTW, around 20% of the book is dedicated to PLO (Pot-Limit Omaha).

Phil's best and among The Best

My poker shelf has around 100 books on it,
but this one will be among the 3 or 4 that
get re-read, underlined, highlighted and
referred to over and over.

I think it's the best book Phil's written, and
I've considered all the "Little" books good.
Within the poker writing universe, Little Gold
Book goes into more depth than just about any other,
and likewise has a lot of breadth for one book.
And while I consider most poker books to be
targeted at the beginner turning intermediate
(including Phil's previous writing), this book
does a great job of covering the ground from
intermediate well into advanced.

As usual in Phil's writing, he speaks conversationally
and is easily understood, even when digging into
somewhat involved mathematics and advanced concepts.
Another aspect of his writing that I really appreciate
is his ability to look at a topic from several angles,
rather than covering the obvious points and moving on.
In Gold Book for example, he'll often make the
mathematical case for a given play, work out the logic
in great detail to prove his point, but then take it a
step further by reminding you of "meta considerations"
and opponent psychological factors that you can't overlook.
For me, I find this helps keep me out of the mode of
just "playing the numbers" and lets me visualize the other
factors while reading and while playing.

Perhaps Phil's strongest skill as a writer, and
one that Gold Book shows off more than any of
his prior books, is his ability to group and classify
information into easily remembered collections.
Going beyond the obvious groupings of hand types,
Phil further classifies things like board texture,
opponent style, tournament situations, etc.
This gives the reader a huge advantage when trying to
apply the material; it's much easier to remember and
learn and then apply it in real time at the table.

I consider myself a non-pro advanced player, and
I learned a ton from this book that was new to
me and I'm sure will be valuable. I'm glad Phil gets
satisfaction out of giving away (well, for 15 bucks
anyway) his hard earned lessons!

Phil is Golden but this one is very Advanced

From what I've read so far in the Gold Book, it seems like it was geared towards internet players, or those getting started playing on the internet (before online poker was shut down) but the information is still valuable and impressive. I've read both the Green and Blue books which were much easier to understand (it should be said that I am not finished with the Gold), but I am also not a math whiz. The math is not necessarily difficult to pick up after a few read overs, but I just can't see myself being able to apply this at a live poker table in Vegas, or live poker table anywhere with 100% accuracy. In his other books, Phil gets into how to put your opponents on a hand based on what you know about their style, betting patterns, pre and post flop, etc. With this book, it seems like you will have to almost memorize what hands your opponents are playing from different positions, and factor that not only into what hand they might be holding, but also the pot odds and implied odds as compared to whatever hand you have, how many outs you have, whether you want to differentiate your playing style in order to change gears, etc. Its just a lot, and I don't think its for beginner to intermediate players at all. Start with the Green Book or maybe the Black Book which seems very simple. Work your way up. There is a reason the subtitle is "ADVANCED lessons for mastering Poker 2.0". That being said, if you can process it and have a very quick math brain, as well as a great memory, and lots of experience, definitely get the book as Phil is a fun read and you will likely learn a lot. But on a side note, I'm glad the internet poker sites have been shut down, who knows how safe their servers were anyway, and now these math whizzes can't just rely on their geek status to win hands. They will still be strong at a live table, but they may not know their own tells, not be familiar with Casino distractions (like the cocktail waitress leaning over you with a monster set of Dub Ds to take your order) etc., and be out of their element. Still, novices and intermediate players need to be careful because these guys are out there and undoubtedly good.

Introduction Introduction

Well, we are back for yet another PowerShell Unleashed book. However, unlike just a simple revision of the existing book, which most likely would have resulted in only just a few updated chapters, I decided to instead treat this release in the series as almost a completely new book. Granted, the Community Technology Release (CTP) of PowerShell 2.0 did help drive the need to update all aspects of this edition. Nonetheless, there was also a lot of feedback (some positive and some negative) about how the first book could be improved.

So, based on this feedback and the looming PowerShell 2.0 feature list, I set about making a major revision to the book. To start off right, I decided to address how the PowerShell language was covered in the series. After all, the first book in the series was script heavy, but lacking when it came to explaining some of the basics about the PowerShell language. Additionally, we wanted to go into greater detail about how PowerShell could be used to manage Windows resources while further addressing some of the finer technical details of PowerShell’s architecture. Needless to say, all of these changes required a reorganization to not only the layout of the book, but also its size.

The bottom line, in this new edition, there are six completely new chapters with the rest of the existing chapters either being extensively rewritten or updated. With all this extra content, the book needed additional authors to jump on board and help pound out the book’s technical prose. Thus, joining me on this book as coauthors were Marco Shaw (PowerShell MVP) and Peter Handley (contributing author from the first book). Together, Marco and Peter made great additions to this book and infused fantastic ideas together with even better content—all while writing their chapters.

Finally, the primary goal of this book was to start down the path of explaining the features found in the future 2.0 release of PowerShell. After all, with the 2.0 CTP release late last year, the PowerShell product team ignited our imaginations with the possibilities for what might come down the road (remoting). So, we simply had to do our best to explain the new features. However, given that the 2.0 version is still just a CTP and not a beta, we also walked down a slippery slope, considering that some of these features may not exist in the PowerShell 2.0 RTM. Naturally, like a good reporter might do, we did our best. In the end, we tried to include 2.0 content where applicable while also dedicating an entire chapter to only 2.0 features deemed too important to ignore or voted most likely to survive the beta.

We hope our efforts result in a more comprehensive PowerShell book that can act as both a reference for the current PowerShell 1.0 release while also providing insight into where PowerShell might go with the 2.0 release.

Who Is This Book’s Intended Audience?

This Unleashed book is intended for an intermediate level of systems administrators who have invested time and energy learning Windows scripting and want to translate those skills into PowerShell skills while learning how it can meet their real-world needs. This book has been written so that anyone with a scripting background can understand what PowerShell is and how to use it, but by no means is it meant to be a complete PowerShell reference. Instead, think of it as a resource for learning how PowerShell can be applied in your own environment. Therefore, the structure of this book reflects that focus by including numerous command examples and working scripts.

How This Book Is Organized

The book is divided into the following three parts:

• Part I, “Introduction to PowerShell”—In this section, you are introduced to PowerShell and some of its internal workings. Topics covered include items such as why PowerShell came into existence, general concepts about PowerShell and how it is constructed, and an in-depth review of PowerShell security.
• Part II, “Using PowerShell”—In this section, you learn more about the PowerShell scripting language, how to use PowerShell to manage Windows resources, and important best practices to follow when using PowerShell. Specific topics covered range from working with the Windows file system, the Registry, permissions, strings, and Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) to understanding PowerShell language concepts such as loops, functions, arrays, and so on.
• Part III, “Managing Microsoft Technologies with PowerShell”—In this section, you learn how PowerShell can be used to manage Microsoft technologies. Topics covered include using PowerShell to manage Active Directory, Exchange Server 2007, and Systems Center Operations Manager 2007. Additionally, you learn how to programmatically use PowerShell to manage systems and gain insight and understanding into important PowerShell 2.0 features.

Conventions Used in This Book

Commands, scripts, and anything related to code are presented in a special monospace computer typeface. Bold indicates key terms being defined, and italic is used to indicate variables or for emphasis. Great care has been taken to be consistent in letter case, naming, and structure, with the goal of making command and script examples more readable. In addition, you might find instances in which commands or scripts haven’t been fully optimized. This lack of optimization is for your benefit, as it makes those code samples more intelligible and follows the practice of writing code for others to read.

Other standards used throughout this book are as follows:

Black Code Boxes

These code boxes contain commands that run in a PowerShell or Bash shell session.

Gray Code Boxes

These code boxes contain source code from scripts, configuration files, or other items that aren’t run directly in a shell session.

I would recommend this book for help with your powershell scripts

This powershell book has been very helpful in helping me formulate numerous powershell scripts that I have needed to use to help automate my work tasks. It also does a good job of separating tasks out for individual topics that you may be seeking powershell out for in the first place.

Could be better structured/organized.

I find this book difficult to strongly recommend primarily because of how it is organized. The book tends to be front loaded with conceptual rather than task oriented information. For a book on an OS shell that didn't work for me personally. As an example chapter 3 is called Advanced Concepts and discusses intergating with the .NET framework while a basic discussion of how to interact with the file system is deferred until chapter 8 (146 pages later). Without an understanding of how to complete some of the basic tasks in powershell (like manipulating the the file system and executing executables) all the conceptual chapters placed at the front of the book feel ungrounded. The way the book is structured I feel like I had to read through 50% of it before I started extracting real value. A better way to read this book might be to read chapter 1 then start on Chapter Powershell Concepts) but only go so far as the "Getting Help' section. Then jump to Chapter 8 (Powershell and the File System) and then go back and Finish Chapter 2 before jumping forward to chapter 6 (The Powershell Language) followed by chapter 7 (Powershell and Strings). Then go back and read chapters 3 (Advanced Powershell Concepts) and chapter 4 (Other Key Powershell Concepts) then read the remaining chapters on an as needed basis as they cover scripting against various MS technologies (AD, exchange, etc.) not all of which will be applicable to all persons.

Very Poorly Organized

Not only is this book poorly organized, it is also poorly written. Instead of beginning the book with the basics that someone who is new to PowderShell needs to know, the authors delve into some of the nifty features of the language. That is all well and good, but it totally confuses the reader who is new to PowerShell. In chapter three the author gives some examples of how you can obtain some extremely useful information but his examples are totally incomprehensible because the parameters used are cryptic and the authors don't bother to explain where they got them or how to interpret them. The authors don't start getting around to the basics of PowerShell until chapter 6, and even then their explanations leave a lot to be desired. I am an experienced programmer and even I was having difficulty following them. In the first few pages of the book the publisher states that they want to get feedback from readers and they give an email address. I tried sending some feedback to the address listed and got an undeliverable message from my ISP stating that the mailbox didn't exist. It's pretty obvious to me that they don't particularly want any feedback, especially negative, from anyone. I personally wouldn't recommend this book to anyone.

Ready to use CookBook

To my best knowledge, the well-written book gives for the first time a comprehensive treatment of spice and switched-mode power supplies (SMPS's). A short history of modelling techniques is discussed with references to relevant literature; also some tricks to speed up a simulation are given. The main part of the book consists of the small-signal (averaged) and transient models for the most common converters, such as buck, boost, flyback, forward, half-bridge, etc.; all illustrated by examples. Most of the examples are available in electronic format on the accompanying CD-ROM; the reader can start quite quickly with experimenting with the templates. Unfortunately, extracting the models from IsSpice (which we use) is quite cumbersome, since first the demo version has to be installed before the models are available. This demo version conflicts with the commercial version (although Intusoft gives a solution on their web-site). In a next release it would be very helpful to distribute the models separately on the CD (or web?). Nevertheless, the book is according to my opinion very useful for people working in the field of SMPS's. Calculating the closed-loop response and stability analysis is now really easy. Comprehensive, easy to read. Good work.

Not for Beginners

I can understand why many people who bought this book thinking that it would be usefull for learning how to use SPICE or learning how to design power supplies were dissappointed. Basso is definitely not for beginners. The book assumes you have a fundamental knowledge of SPICE and electronics. He provides a generous list of papers and books which the beginner can use to come up to speed on the various complex principals of power supply design.

If you are a working professional in power electronics, buy this book. Basso gives away a lot of very accurate cookbook designs that can be easily "tweaked" to fit any design requirement. The circuits provided in this book made it very easy for me to make a complete working SPICE model of my design in just a few hours.

Learn the fundamentals about power electronics and SPICE, then buy this book.

SPICE Cookbook that really cooks

This is a complete Power Supply Designers Toolkit/cookbook with ready to run simulation templates for optimun solutions to loop stabilization. There is just enought backgrown information for understanding the models derivation. The attached CD-ROM contains all the models necessary for fast solutions. I particually liked the spreadsheet for solving loop components values using K Factor analysis. I don't know how many times in the last 20 years that I could have used this solver. The real power of this book is access to the author thru his web site. I just e-mailed him my faulty file and he quickly told me how to fix my mistakes. It's like having an expert on call. The author does a nice job of tying in other well known experts in the field and using their expertise to make this book a complete study in the art of Power Supply loop design.

EXCELLENT REVIEW IN ACLS TO SAVE LIVES

It is funny how some people act insulted because the "Incredibly Easy" series books have "cartoons" in them; but, I think this is a wonderful book that explains things very very well. Getting a thorough grasp of learning critical concepts is very important when you are dealing with human lives! Who cares about the cartoons, besides the cartoons have "get to the point" information reminders. Every time I opened and studied from this book, I feel like a hero because I learn something every time. This book is hard for me to close because I find it so interesting, and fascinating to learn this stuff. I would highly recommend this book to anyone taking ACLS for the first time, or to review.

This book while very good is out of date with the newly released AHA 2016 standards. You can not go by the information in it as many things have changed in the new guidelines. Wish I would have checked the date before buying.

Long Live King George's Recipes!

Cookbook is a welcomed addition to my collection. We loved eating at Le Bec Fin and miss the quality and presentation of Perrier's dishes. Well written, clear instructions, and little tricks and/or ideas to improve recipes. After visiting France recently and ate simple and delicious dishes, I value King George's book even more.

Fantastic meals

This is one of the best cookbooks I own. I have often dined at Le Bec Fin and there is simply no comparison in Philadelphia. As far as the cookbook, I routinely prepare the Poached Turkey recipe (always to raving reviews), the Scalloped Potato recipe and the Lobster Bisque recipe for holiday dinners. The Lobster bisque is absolutely fantastic and the best I have ever tasted and it came from my very own kitchen. Tres bien!!

Over the years, I have made many of the recipes and, even though they can be somewhat complicated sometimes, the results are just superior. This is truly a special cookbook. I own at least 75 other cookbooks and this is one of my favorites that I go back to year-after-year.

A lot of these star chef with brilliant restaurant cookbooks fall flat when you actually try to cook, at home, from them. This one is a success though. Clear recipes with good cooking instructions and ideas dominate the book. The organization is clear. The photography is both helpful and enticing.

About the Author
Joy Nur has been a student of Qabalah and a member of Builders of the Adytum since 1978. During her studies, meditation on the Cube and its Tarot correspondences brought her rich insight. Joy is now living in Carbondale, Illinois, and continuing her spiritual practice as a member of an intentional Sufi community.

New perspective for someone interested in Qabalah or Tarot

Book provides a profound meditation tool for students of Tarot by presenting new relationships between the symbolism of the major arcana of Tarot as they relate to the Cube as a symbol for human reality. By presenting seed ideas and provocative questions for contemplation, the reader is led to a deeper understanding of Tarot symbolism and an understanding of the meaning of life cycles in the context of spiritual evolution.

Excellent Introductory Study Guide

The very depth of the Cube of Space imagery and study is tough to begin, with little or no foundation. Joy Nur elegantly handles the basic concepts, and offers them in an easily digestible, visual method. The accompanying study questions help ignite further thought and insight.
Highly recommended for anyone struggling with the larger concepts and beginners interested in the idea of a new perspective on the Tree of Life, the Universe, and the Tarot.

The book may be fine, but you should order in paper book form. The diagrams are impossible to see clearly on the small screen of the kindle, even with enlarger.
