About the Author

Thomas F. Oltmanns is the Edgar James Swift Professor of Psychology in Arts and Sciences and Professor of Psychiatry at Washington University in St. Louis, where he is also Director of Clinical Training in Psychology. He received his B.A. from the University of Wisconsin and his Ph.D. from the State University of New York at Stony Brook. He was previously a faculty member in the psychology departments at Indiana University (1976 to 1986) and at the University of Virginia (1986 to 2003). He is currently a member of the Board of Directors of the Association for Psychological Science, served as President of the Society for a Science of Clinical Psychology in 1993, and is President-elect of the Society for Research in Psychopathology. Undergraduate students at UVa recognized his teaching by selecting him to receive the “Outstanding Professor Award” in 1997 and 2002. His early research was concerned with the role of cognitive and emotional factors in schizophrenia. His lab is currently conducting a large, prospective study of the trajectory of personality disorders in middle-aged and older adults. His other books include Schizophrenia (1980), written with John Neale; Delusional Beliefs (1988), edited with Brendan Maher; and Case Studies in Abnormal Psychology (8th edition, 2009), written with Michele Martin.

Robert E. Emery is Professor of Psychology, Director of the Center for Children, Families, and the Law, and an associate faculty member of the Institute of Law, Psychiatry, and Public Policy at the University of Virginia. He also served as Director of Clinical Training for nine years. He received a B.A. from Brown University in 1974 and a Ph.D. from SUNY at Stony Brook in 1982. His research focuses on family conflict, children’s mental health, and associated legal issues, and he has authored over 100 scientific articles and book chapters. His awards include a “Citation Classic” from the Institute for Scientific Information, an Outstanding Research Publication Award from the American Associate for Marriage and Family Therapy, the Distinguished Researcher Award from the Association of Family and Conciliation Courts, and several awards and award nominations for his three books on divorce: Marriage, Divorce and Children’s Adjustment (2nd ed., 1998, Sage Publications), Renegotiating Family Relationships: Divorce, Child Custody, and Mediation (1994, Guilford Press), and The Truth about Children and Divorce: Dealing with the Emotions So You and Your Children Can Thrive (2004, Viking). His current research is on genetically informed (twin) studies of the effects of major changes in family environments, including divorce, harsh parenting, early menarche, and teen pregnancy.

Great book. Not the average textbook.

Awesome, awesome book. Extremely engaging. I felt that it was a little opinionated, but not in a bad way. It's fairly easy to read and it does well in explaining everything. This book really helped me appreciate abnormal psychology a lot more. Another great thing about it is that the materials are extremely up-to-date. It was a textbook that I actually didn't mind reading at all.
I only rented this book, but I wish I had the money to buy it!

Phenomenal!

It's an outstanding textbook. I got it for my Abnormal Psychology course and I really enjoyed reading it. The text is easy to understand. The way it is organized makes it easy to follow. I liked how they integrated the DSM-5 into the textbook. It's great to be able to relate the material to the APA manual. And the case studies in every chapter made the diagnosis even clearer. Overall, quite a useful textbook.

About the Author
P. G. Wodehouse (1881–1975) was born in Surrey, educated in London, and spent much of his life in Southampton, Long Island, becoming an American citizen in 1955. In a literary career spanning more than seventy years, he published more than ninety books, twenty film scripts, and collaborated on more than thirty plays and musical comedies.

Pure Gold

Ukridge is P G Wodehouse's greatest creation. Unfairly eclipsed in the public imagination by Jeeves&Wooster, for the simple reason that like Psmith Wodehouse didn't write that much for the character. But what there is, is pure gold and 'Ukridge' is no exception. No one story stands out as they're all mini-masterpieces. Get hold of it as soon as you can, old horse!

Ukridge Romps!

If you haven't met Stanley Featherstonehaugh Ukridge yet, you've missed a treat. I think of Ukridge as a comic character virtually equal to Falstaff.

P.G. Wodehouse based the character on a school friend which adds extra poignancy to the many hilarious tales in this book.

The book has ten chapters, each of which is an entire short story. However, the stories are connected to one another so you have continuing development of characters and plots.

The story is told from the perspective of the long-suffering James Corcoran, an impecunious author who is one of Ukridge's favorite sources of money, clothes, lodgings and all other sorts of accommodations.

Ukridge is a great schemer . . . who doesn't bother to work out all of the details. He's confident that an abundant universe will take care of him. Sometimes he's right and sometimes not.

Most people will be thrilled by Ukridge's career as a boxing manager for Battling Billson, the most mercurial fighter the world has ever know. Three chapters are devoted to that story.

The book opens with a classic Ukridge scheme; he's going to make a mint by training dogs to behave at Ukridge's Dog College.

The second story, Ukridge's Accident Syndicate, shows that even if a scheme works, it may not pay off in the way you expected.

Ukridge tries his hand at being a political surrogate in The Long Arm of Looney Coote, with hilarious consequences.

In First Aid for Dora, Ukridge decides to help Dora recover from having lost her job . . . which she lost because of him. With help like his, one should probably seek out enemies instead! In Ukridge Sees Her Through, Dora gets more "help" from Ukridge.

Ukridge is prone to overstate his position to others. He lives to regret that tendency when it almost leads to unexpected matrimony in No Wedding Bells for Him.

In Ukridge Rounds a Nasty Corner, Ukridge falls in love and has to prove himself worthy of his love's family. Now that's a tough trick!

You can read each of these stories in less than an hour. I suggest spacing them out over time so you can enjoy their flavor longer.

The Big, Broad Flexible Outlook

Stanley Featherstonehaugh Ukridge, that enemy of mankind, stars in ten brilliant short stories, all narrated by his long-suffering friend James Corcoran. Ukridge (pronounced "ook-ridge"), moocher of socks, shirts, and fivers, evader of creditors, bane of rich aunts, is another of Wodehouse's many great comic creations. Perhaps the best of these are about his management of soft-hearted fighter Wilberforce "Battling" Billson, but the stories are uniformly excellent and hilarious; full of unpredictable comic twists and the brilliant language and dialogue that make Wodehouse a full-fledged genius.
On the first page of the first story Ukridge offers Corocoran the rights to his life story for a hundred pounds down (quickly reduced to twenty-five). Corcoran, who foolishly lets the opportunity slip, may have lacked the big, broad, flexible outlook in this one instance, but P.G. certainly didn't.
The well-crafted, nice-looking edition is another winner in Everyman's excellent serires.

Great book, not so great Amazon

Yet another awesome edition to the AGU series. Thank you Me Deprima for enthralling us again with another fine space opera novel. It's interesting to see how Sydnee Marcola & Jenetta's stories start to come together. Looking forward to the next edition!

The book is deserving of a 5 star, but without a Kindle version some of us may never be able to read it due to draconian Amazon policies, so Amazon deserves a 1 star. I hope Amazon starts treating Mr Deprima with the respect he deserves as an author & we can start getting his books on Kindle again.

A Pedagogy of Place is the first of its kind to articulate a renewal of philosophy and practice for outdoor education that is in keeping with the educational needs of today's young people as they grapple with considerable social and ecological changes in a rapidly changing world. The authors draw extensively on international, national, and local literature, and provide compelling case studies drawn from the Australian and New Zealand contexts.

A "must read" for learning to be playwright's

"A More Perfect Ten" is as compelling a read as the10 minute play itself should be. Reading this book gives me the sense that this writer knows his subject backward and forward and is willing to share his knowledge so we might also know what we're doing when play writing. I like this book because it is concise, filled with the craft of writing, and can be read with interest. My only reservation is what seemed to be a similarity of many of the example plays. None the less, they are plays written by known playwrights. I'm adding this book to my play writing library and expect to refer back to it often, especially when I begin my next short play. I'd recommend this book as one of the few that focus on the writing and production of the 10 minute play.

It Is Not a Perfect Ten

I found the book to be fair. It was slanted to telling the writers where to send their manuscripts, and had tips on how to be a more effective script writer. It could have spent more time analyzing the samples of ten minute plays, including the author's example.I wonder if one couldn't get most of the information on-line, instead of buying this book.

Gary does a nice job of organizing lots of information into simple, easy to follow rules. The interviews with professional producers are enlightening, and the inclusion of example plays was a nice touch.
