He is a prior recipient of national research fellowships from KPMG Peat Marwick and the Ernst and Young Foundation. Professor Wild is also a frequent speaker at universities and at national and international conferences.

The author of more than 50 publications, in addition to four best-selling textbooks, Professor Wild conducts research on a wide range of topics, including corporate governance, capital markets, and financial analysis and forecasting. He is an active member of several national and international organizations, including the Academy of International Business, and has served as Associate Editor or editorial board member for several prestigious journals.

Kenneth L. Wild�is affiliated with the University of London, England. He previously taught at the Pennsylvania State University. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Manchester (UMIST) in England and his B.S. and M.S. degrees from the University of Wisconsin. Dr. Wild also undertook postgraduate work at �cole des Affairs Internationale in Marseilles, France.

Jerry C.Y. Han,who passed away September 26, 2002, was Pong Ding Yuen Professor at the University of Hong Kong School of Business, where he was Director of the School’s China Management Programs. He also held appointments at several Chinese Universities, including Beijing University and Renmin University. Professor Han previously held faculty appointments at the University of Buffalo, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), Michigan State University, and National Chung Hsing University. He received his Bachelors degree from National Chung Hsing University, Masters degree from National Chengchi University, and Ph.D. from the University of Buffalo.

Professor Han was a highly recognized teacher, known for his commitment and creativity in business education. He was a prior recipient of research fellowships from the government of Hong Kong, HKUST, Price Waterhouse, and National Chengchi University. Dr. Han was actively involved in several national and international organizations, including serving as President of the North American Chinese Association.

The author of more than 40 publications on various business topics, including international regulatory and disclosure issues, Professor Han served on the editorial boards of several prestigious journals. He also consulted with international companies and government agencies, as well as taught business courses for international companies across several industries.

Great textbook, student perspective.

This is just one of many examples I have encountered where a good textbook can make a subject I thought I would hate interesting. The textbook is well written and easy to follow. It has some anecdotal information which I find helpful for keeping a reader interested. It could have had more, which is why I awarded four stars instead of five. Overall, I am happy with the quality.

About the Author
Mustafa El-Amin was born in Newark, N.J. in 1957. He was introduced to, and accepted the teachings of the Nation of Islam, under the leadership of the Hon. Elijahh Muhammad, in 1972. Upon the death of Hon. Elijah Muhammad in 1975, Mustafa made a smooth transition of accepting the leadership of Imam Warith Deen Mohammed, and the pure teachings of Al-Islam based upon the Holy Qur'an and the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad Ibn Abdullah.

Don't bother.

Waste of time for any knowledgable mason. Too much time wasted on symbolism. As we all know different symbols mean different things to different people. Are we really supposed to waste time reading about the dollar bill or the double headed eagle again?

This is a excellent book. I read this when I joined a prince hall freemasonry. Also I was to know that majority of Elijah Muhammad teachings is closely related to masonary and our ancient ancestors. Interesting information

Good effort first Flink text

Good effort on the first (and currently only) book available on Apache Flink. As the authors comment in the introductory pages, the purpose of this book is to investigate potential advantages of working with data streams in order to help readers determine whether a stream-based approach is an architecturally good fit for meeting business goals. Additionally, this book is intended to help its audience understand the technology behind Flink and how it tackles stream processing challenges.

For some readers, it is important to note that this book is conceptual in nature and does not provide any programmatic content. While I recently attended a Flink meetup event in which the presenter indicated they had significant difficulty figuring out how to use Flink in its early days over the past year or so, using the web documentation provided by the project should be considered the next logical step after understanding the underlying concepts and applicable use cases.

After discussing data streaming and the consequences of not streaming well, the authors present introductory material on the goals for processing continuous event data, the evolution of stream processing technologies, an overview of the advantages and limitations of Lambda architecture, and comparisons between Flink, Storm, and Spark Streaming, followed by discussions of the hows and whys behind Flink handling of both batch and stream processing via the DataSet API and DataStream API, as well as working with streaming data in general, regardless of chosen product.

The second chapter continues this discussion, delving deeper by taking a look at stream-first architectures in comparison to traditional architectures that attempt to maintain state across distributed systems, with the reminder that usage is not limited to low-latency use cases. The two main types of components, message transport and stream processor, are then explained, typically referring to Apache Kafka as the former and Flink as the latter, although the authors do later periodically mention MapR Streams when it offers functionality not currently provided by Flink (e.g. geo-distributed stream replication).

The focus of the third chapter is a discussion of the different types of correctness and what Flink provides in this context. One of the first questions the authors ask about is the level at which one's processing framework enables computational window fit for web activity analytics to actual user behavior. As explained, it is difficult to use micro-batches or fixed computational windows such as these do not overlap naturally occurring sessions. Flink enables more flexible definitions of these windows, for example, but taking inactivity into account. In addition, Flink handles event time in addition to traditional processing time. The authors provide a peek into the discussions of these topics in the following chapter, and explain how Flink use of checkpoints enable fault tolerance.

The fourth chapter turns its focus to handling time, and explain at the outset that one crucial difference between programming applications for a stream processor and programming applications for a batch processor (such as MapReduce) is the need to explicitly handle time in the former. Companies that use Hadoop typically have several pipelines running in their clusters which make use of a tool like Apache Flume and batch jobs scheduled by a scheduler for analyses. However, the authors explain that while this architecture can be made to work, there are several problems with it: too many moving parts, implicit treatment of time, inaccurate early alerts, out of order events, and unclear batch boundaries.

Use of a streaming architecture reduces complexity. An approach that uses Kafka and Flink treats the never-ending stream of incoming events as a stream rather than artificial segments, and encodes the definition of time in the application code rather than spreading this definition across ingestion, compuatation, and scheduling. While the authors discuss the concept of micro-matching and how this is implemented differently across tools, they explain that developers should not be concerned about whether this is being done, but whether out-of-order streams, sessions, and other misaligned windows can be handled, whether early alerts and accurate aggregates can be provided, and whether past data can be deterministically replayed.

Containing about 30% of the content, the fifth chapter is the longest. After explaining the differences between stateful and stateless computation, the authors explain that while the most interesting applications of stream processing are stateful, implementations are also much more challenging. The remainder of the chapter focuses on this aspect of these technologies, first by explaining the three different levels of consistency in the stream processing world with which readers will probably already be familiar from other readings, followed by a brief tangent about the history of earlier tooling, Flink use of checkpoints to provide "exactly once" consistency and savepoints to manage versions of state, an explanation of end-to-end consistency, and benchmarks.

The authors close the discussion with a chapter on batch processing, which they argue is really just a special case of streaming. Flink can process data both as a continuous unbounded stream or as bounded streams (i.e. batch), making use of the DataStream API or DataSet API with the same backend stream processing engine. The final use case that is presented compares processing time results using MapReduce 2.71, Tez 0.7.0, Spark 1.5.1, and Flink 0.9.1 for both TeraSort and HashJoin. Overall, a good presentation in a freely available report.

About the Author
Kathleen Park Talaro is a microbiologist, educator, author, and artist. She has been nurturing her love of microbiology since her youth growing up on an Idaho farm where she was first fascinated by tiny creatures she could just barely see swimming in a pond. This interest in the microbial world led to a biology major at Idaho State University, where she worked as a teaching assistant and scientific illustrator for one of her professors. This was the beginning of an avocation that she continues today―that of lending her artistic hand to interpretation of scientific concepts. She continued her education at Arizona State University, Occidental College, California Institute of Technology, and California State University. She has taught microbiology and major’s biology courses at Pasadena City College for 30 years, during which time she developed new curricula and refined laboratory experiments. She has been an author of, and contributor to, several publications of the William C. Brown Company and McGraw-Hill Publishers since the early 1980s, first illustrating and writing for laboratory manuals and later developing this textbook. She has also served as a coauthor with Kelly Cowan on the first two editions of Microbiology: A Systems Approach. Kathy continues to make microbiology a major focus of her life and is passionate about conveying the significance and practical knowledge of the subject to students, colleagues, family, friends, and practically anyone who shows interest. In addition to her writing and illustration, she keeps current attending conferences and participating in the American Society for Microbiology and its undergraduate educational programs. She is gratified by the many supportive notes and letters she has received over the years from devotees of microbiology and users of her book. She lives in Altadena, California, with husband Dave Bedrosian, and son David. Whenever she can, she visits her family in Idaho. In her spare time, she enjoys photography, reading true crime books, music, crossword puzzles, and playing with her rescued kitties.

Barry Chess has been teaching microbiology at Pasadena City College for over 15 years. He received his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from California State University, Los Angeles, and did several years of postgraduate work at the University of California, Irvine, where his research focused on the expression of eukaryotic genes involved in the development of muscle and bone. At Pasadena City College, Barry developed a new course in human genetics and helped to institute a biotechnology program. He regularly teaches courses in microbiology, general biology, and genetics, and works with students completing independent research projects in biology and microbiology. Over the past several years, Barry’s interests have begun to focus on innovative methods of teaching that lead to greater student understanding. He has written cases for the National Center for Case Study Teaching in Science and presented talks at national meetings on the use of case studies in the classroom. In 2009, his laboratory manual, Laboratory Applications in Microbiology: A Case Study Approach, was published. He is thrilled and feels very fortunate to be collaborating with Kathy Talaro, with whom he has worked in the classroom for more than a decade, on this ninth edition. Barry is a member of the American Society for Microbiology and regularly attends meetings in his fields of interest, both to keep current of changes in the discipline and to exchange teaching and learning strategies with others in the field.

the book was wrapped in shrink-wrap. interestingly enough, ...

the book was wrapped in shrink-wrap. interestingly enough, there were some pages with damage, but not enough to return the book and then fall behind on the material for my class, daily quizzes and all. this international version had the same info as the u.s. version. the one thing the professor mentioned was that the authors had provided some misinformation for some of the later sections in the book. so she created her own material for the class to remedy that. other than that, the book did the job for my microbiology class.

Theory not examples

Not what I expected. It has alot of general information about what Care plans are but very little about actual care plans themselves or examples. If your intentions are to use this as an aid in actually writting care plans, go else where. If you just want to know what the various components mean and their theory, well then OK.

I really like this book. I compare it to the "dummy" series. It really helped me understand the pieces and parts of the careplan process. The book we were using in first semester really did not do much for me in understanding the ND's. This book breaks down forming them and helps in other areas as well!
