About the Author
Conrad Phillip Kottak (A.B. Columbia, 1963; Ph.D. Columbia, 1966) is Professor and Chair of Anthropology at the University of Michigan, where he has taught since 1968. �In 1991 he was honored for his teaching by the University and the state of Michigan. �In 1992 he received an excellence in teaching award from the College of Literature, Sciences, and the Arts of the University of Michigan. �Professor Kottak has done fieldwork in cultural anthropology in Brazil (since 1962), Madagascar (since 1966), and the United States. In current research projects, Kottak and his colleagues have investigated the emergence of ecological awareness in Brazil, the social context of deforestation in Madagascar, and popular participation in economic development planning in northeastern Brazil.

A mirror to Anthropology 102.

I got this book for an 8 week course and the professor had us read the whole thing. It's not overly complicated as the reader can tell that Kottak does an adequate job of breaking down important anthropology lingo with definitions and examples. This book is exactly what the cover states, a concise introduction to anthropology. At the end of the semester I go away feeling like I learned a thing or two, for that five stars.

This textbook is a triumph for the teaching of Cultural Anthropology. Used the kindle edition for my ANTH 103 class at UIUC, and let me tell you, it was something else! I was expecting Anthropology to be boring, but this book really opened my eyes to what it means to be influenced by culture. This book changed how I look at the world. I recommend it to anybody and everybody.

"Be Still and Know" is the best devotional book I have used.

Millie Stamm's "Be Still and Know" supplies 366 of the most thought-filled, prayer-filled, and I found, God-filled devotionals I have ever used. She chose scripture that seems particularly suited for anyone whose life is not proceeding exactly as planned. Her commentary illuminates through well chosen and well written stories. By the end of the year I had so many pages marked with scraps of paper that the book had nearly doubled in size. I shared many of the devotionals with friends and family and with my pastor who found inspiration for sermons in them. It is an excellent devotional book.

This is my favorite devotional book. It's as if your grandmother were writing her thoughts and sending them just to you. Millie shares her experience with God in a way that's encouraging, never harsh. But, she still manages to be direct and clear in her words. It's obvious that she has been through her own sorrows and grown in them and is willing to tell us what she knows. I met Millie once and she was just like her book. She was an unpretentious grandmotherly-looking lady who seemed very quiet. When you read her book, you'll find she's got a lot of strength hidden in that quietness.
If you need comfort; if you want to learn more about God; if you want to know how people know God personally, this is a good book for you.

My girls get excited for these for their summer work. They feel more confident in math after their first workbooks, so I am continuing to use them to supplement ay home what they are studying in school. These workbooks made an especially big difference for my oldest who has struggled in math.

Nice for aging eyes ;)

This is the 'go to' for a lot of diabetics. It doesn't have protein or fiber amounts, but it's nice for on the run, or figuring insulin for insulin:carb doses. I keep the regular size print in my purse, and the large size near my insulin and medication area.

First Rate Aide for Counting Carbs for Diabetes Health!

A couple years ago, my son was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes. This means we have to count carbs. The hospital recommended The CalorieKing book for counting carbs, and it really is a great book. The original book is a small paperback size, with print to match. It's OK with my reading glasses, but I was overjoyed to find that they publish a larger print edition, also.

This is a review of the 2014 Larger Print Edition. The Larger Print Edition isn't the LARGE print that you see in a large-print novel. But it is LARGER print, and I really appreciate it. The size of the larger print book itself is a little bigger than the regular CalorieKing edition, but it's still paperback book size. Easy to store in a purse or glove compartment or backpack.

Both books are the same thickness, a shade over 1/2"

CalorieKing deserves it's reputation for thoroughness. The main reason you'd need updated editions of it is if you eat out a lot. It can be very difficult to estimate carbs in restaurant food. Each year's updated menus of the larger restaurant chains are welcome. But as far as grocery food, the apple and broccoli carb counts won't change from year to year, and packaged groceries will always have a label telling, among other things, how many carbs per serving.

To give you an example of what a lifesaver CalorieKing is, I took a trip last year with my son, traveling by air. It was fantastic to just look in this book and total the carbs as he ordered a meal from Arby's in the airport food court. It couldn't have made it easier!

Though we use this book for carb counting, for each item you are given three values: the total calories, the total grams of fat, and the total grams of carbohydrates. Examples:

What I've done with bananas, is kind of average all these counts, to make it easier. Now we measure the banana and figure 3.8 carbs (grams) per inch. Pears come out to about 3.5 carbs per oz. Apples to 3.2 per oz. And to measure the food in ounces or grams I can highly recommend the reasonably priced, easy-to-use, great little scale made by EatSmart: EatSmart Precision Pro Digital Kitchen Scale, White

For different size portions, you extrapolate. The book states that a 7 oz pear is 25 carbs. If your pear is 11 oz, then its carb calculation:

11 oz divided by 7 oz = 1.57 (the 11 oz pear is 0.57 larger than (or 157% of) the 7 oz pear)

1.57 x 25 carbs for a 7 oz pear = 39 carbs for the 11 oz pear

The calculations, until you get to the point where you can eyeball sizes for an estimate, can be tiresome, but that's how it goes. To have this marvelous book to give basic carb counts is invaluable.

Very handy book. I bought one copy for each glove compartment, one for each grandparent house, one for the house, one for my purse, and one for travel! I have been updating my edition each year, just because we do eat out and get take-out. It's great to pick up some fried rice at Panda Express, and be able to just look up the carbs.

I like the Calorie, Fat and Carb Counter book. I prefer having a paper copy of calorie counts, etc so I can browse through it before shopping. It seems easier than browsing online. This one also has color photos of the foods. It's a good book. I got the larger print and I like that.

About the Author
Rudolf Steiner (1861–1925) was born in the small village of Kraljevec, Austro-Hungarian Empire (now in Croatia), where he grew up. As a young man, he lived in Weimar and Berlin, where he became a well-published scientific, literary, and philosophical scholar, known especially for his work with Goethe’s scientific writings. At the beginning of the twentieth century, he began to develop his early philosophical principles into an approach to systematic research into psychological and spiritual phenomena. Formally beginning his spiritual teaching career under the auspices of the Theosophical Society, Steiner came to use the term Anthroposophy (and spiritual science) for his philosophy, spiritual research, and findings. The influence of Steiner’s multifaceted genius has led to innovative and holistic approaches in medicine, various therapies, philosophy, religious renewal, Waldorf education, education for special needs, threefold economics, biodynamic agriculture, Goethean science, architecture, and the arts of drama, speech, and eurythmy. In 1924, Rudolf Steiner founded the General Anthroposophical Society, which today has branches throughout the world. He died in Dornach, Switzerland.

One of the finest looking role-playing books ever published.

A beautifully detailed Late Medieval campaign world, well-written and largely historical with a dash of fantasy, covering everything from kingdoms and nobility to adventuring and daily life. Despite it's depth, it's essentially systemless and usable with any fantasy game, new or old. The book itself is nothing short of a high culture artifact, it's lavishly illustrated with excellent Medieval artwork, from centuries of artists, two and three pieces per page. In nearly 40 years of gaming, I've seen no other single book so completely saturate you, in the atmosphere of a campaign world. For those who believe they've grown tired of the Medieval European fantasy genre, this book should rekindle that wonder you had when you saw your first suit of armor. For those already in love with knights and castles, welcome home. Thanks Pundit and Dom!

Highly Recommended "Dark Albion: The Rose War". Richly packed with Medieval and War of the Roses info, gaming ideas & aides.

Dark Albion is a very detailed resource of a pseudo-historical fantasy world set in England during the period of the War of the Roses ie. 1453-1485. I am really not interested in the Fantasy aspect of the book - my main interest being Historical Miniatures in the Late Medieval Period and in particularly the War of the Roses. My background and viewpoint being stated - this book is a fantastic resource for the War of the Roses and I highly recommend it ! Let me give you a short review with some comments on how I intend to use this resource.

The introduction outlines the authors' basic premise of Dark Albion: The Rose War. It is "a setting in a quasi-historical kingdom very similar to that of 15th Century England." The author also states that he had been educated as an historian; and his knowledge of the period is truly remarkable - it is what makes this book such a great resource. At this point the reader is given several things to keep in mind ( a setting of ground rules so-to-speak ) and the differences between Albion and our historical world.

The Gazetteer of Albion describes the Government, Religion, Magic, Minorities, Technology/Warfare and Dangers/Adventure that are in the country. The tweeks to the History and Geography by the Author keeps things pseudo-historical, but the names, locations etc. are 80-85% historical and I had very little trouble identifying the fact from fiction. Next all the regions of England Albion are presented with the history and background of each region. Accompanying each regions' review are maps, notes, cities, towns and castle names and information along with prominent Nobles in the area. The information in this section is almost overwhelming but it is presented in a well thought out manner and will be easy to find the referenced information. I intend to use this information as background to my Imagi-Nation and the various mini-campaigns and situations that I am envisioning. I would say that about 85-90% of this section will be useful to the historical gamer.

There is a Law and Justice in Albion section that that seems to be a pretty accurate description of late Medieval times. I will be the first to admit that I am no expert in this area but again I would estimate 75-80% being an accurate description of Medieval Law and Justice but the section will be very useful to flesh out story details in an Imagi-Nation. Topics covered in this section include handling Law and Punishment, Secular and Ecclesiastical Courts, Law Enforcement, Prison, Trials, Trial by Combat, Torture, Punishments Fines etc. All quite useful Medieval stuff.

A History of Albion section is richly packed with a lot of historical background information about 80-85% historical and covers the period 1453-1485. This will help to provide great background context material for an Imagi-Nation.

There is a section on Currency and Coinage which can be used as is for an Imagi-Nation. There is also economic information that covers Medieval wages and the costs of Medieval living - along with the ever present Medieval taxation practices. A lot of useful Medieval history and fact in this section.

Rounding out the Historical and Imagi-Nation usefulness there are several tables of Medieval Name generators. They will be just the ticket for a mini fictional campaign in my War of the Roses Imagi-Nation. Tables are available for Anglish Names, Common Female Anglish names, Examples of Last Names for Upper Gentry and the Knightly Class, Scots Names - Male and Female and Last Names, and lastly Welsh Male and Female common names.

There are many other sections that are aimed at the Fantasy World that have concepts and ideas that can also be useful in an Imagi-Nation setting but that I will not cover here.

In conclusion I cannot recommend "Dark Albion: The Rose War" enough. It is richly packed with Medieval and War of the Roses information, gaming ideas and aides.

This is a fantastic product. It it so entertaining to read and you can learn about the Rose War while you're doing it. I don't think I would use this for a campaign as I'm not real partial to playing in a real world setting. But much can be taken out and used for a home-brew setting. And I will say this came real close to me thinking about trying a real world game. Rpg Pundit did a great job writing it and DOM did and equally fantastic job putting it all together.

Roberts wrote the horrid torturous scenes so intense that the picture was easily painted in my mind

Captive in the Dark is so twisted and mind blowing that I had to walk away from this book a few times. C.J. Roberts wrote the horrid torturous scenes so intense that the picture was easily painted in my mind. I found myself not crying for the prisoner, I became angry, frightened and confused.
In a book this dark I am suppose to hate the kidnapper, torturer and slave trainer Caleb. The story line makes it confusing to understand your own feelings for him, there's no wonder Olivia ( kitten) feels as if she has stockholm syndrome.
Caleb's plan is simple, he has been planning for 12 yrs to get revenge for his past and help the man that saved him when he was young and held captive also get his revenge. Caleb needs a american girl to train and sale as a sex slave to this man that he holds responsible for what he went through as a child.
He stalks this 18 year old Olivia for weeks and realizes she is the one that he needs. Livvie is strong, feisty and has a questionable sexual urge. After she is kidnapped, beaten and held prisoner he tries to break her down every time she rebels, he never realized that his feeling for her could destroy all that he has planned. The horrible thing is that Caleb is not the only one that insist that this plan is seen through to the end.
I never once saw this as a love story, it is about two tortured souls. One that is fueled with vengeance and a appetite to inflict pain which was brought on by his past (doesn't make it right) and has never known what it is to love. The other has a need to feel loved, touched and for someone to know that she exist. The relationship of Caleb the torturer ( Master) and the prisoner Olivia is so dark and twisted with a sinister sexual draw that is unfathomable.
Captive in the Dark had me from the first page and I will be reading Seduced in the Dark (Dark Duet #2).

HOLY S***! I loved this series. I also read this series a while back and I am going to review them together as they make one continuous story. They are not stand alone.

This is by far one of the most disturbing and dark stories I have ever read, but I was captivated. I normally like happy romance novels but the fact that this story grabbed me testifies to how talented C.J. Roberts is.

This series revolves around the world of sex slavery. I was absolutely disgusted with this world. It made me so angry that people can abuse children, women, and men like that. It makes sex such a dirty and vile thing. My heart bled for Caleb and Livvie both. This book literally had me rethinking my career choice to become a FBI agent to fight sex crimes.

Then there was the whole Stockholm syndrome that Livvie suffered from. How do you fall in love with your captor??? From this book, I totally get it. I kind of fell in love with Caleb too despite the terrible things he did to Livvie (and he did some TERRIBLE things to her). The glimpses of affection were enough to bring hope that Caleb would learn to love. Totally messed up right??? Well, that is good writing for you. At a certain point I felt like I was suffering from Stockholm syndrome.

This book had me tied in knots, but the ending was worth the entire journey. My heart felt at peace with the Epilogue. I was happy to see Livvie becoming a strong person and living her life. I was glad Caleb tried to make peace with his past. I was so happy they found each other. No matter how terrible their journey was, I truly felt that Livvie and Caleb were meant to b… soul mates.

I don’t think this book is for everyone because the content is so intense and I’m not sure everyone could handle this subject matter. However, for those of you who can, this is one of the best series I have read. This story stays with me and I literally needed almost a week to get over the book. TOP FAVORITE SERIES RIGHT HERE!!

Worth Reading But I Didn't Find It Romantic or Erotic

In my continuing 2013 quest to read things that have been on my Kindle for a really long time, I finally got to this one.

Ok. Where to begin? Is it well written? Definitely. Did it hold my interest? Yes. Did I find it thought-provoking? Yes. Did I enjoy it? No. Do I have to have enjoyed it to find it worth reading? No. Am I conflicted about Caleb? Not one bit.

Caleb's a sick SOB & no amount of recounting how he came to be such, did a thing to sway me to rooting for, liking or absolving him. I knew I wasn't going to be giving this guy any passes when it was disclosed that he'd watched Livvie through the fence at her highschool for weeks before she's taken. Really. I was interested in him in the same way one is interested in the criminally insane & sadistic. In that way that you would sit on a jury & not flinch as he's sentenced to spend the rest of his days in a locked down psychiatric facility with a team of MDs & PhDs trying to unwind his psyche. Call me a provincial chica, I don't want the heroine to "help" this guy. He can't be "loved" better. There is no special snowflake that can "fix" him. He needs clinicians to get to work on that. For years. And even then, not a guy I'd spend a second whinging on about his damage, scars & feelings.

That is what I felt as I read this book. I didn't feel sympathy or solace or anything close to redemption relating to Caleb. And to my mind, that's perfectly fine. He wasn't acting out fantasies, he was perpetrating a criminal endeavor on Livvie. He felt absolved at times because he deemed actions "her choice" but there's no freedom in the matter when the underlying act is against one's will. What I did get & find utterly fascinating with regard to Caleb, is the question: When is it that you become the thing you hate on your quest for revenge? And how just is your cause when you've destroyed & damaged innocents in the the way others did to you when you were so? That old proverb about digging two graves when you begin your quest has always fascinated me. So that, was my only draw to read on about Caleb. And yes, I wanted him to die at the end of this whole thing. I hold hope that he still meets his end in the second book. No matter how things played out, I couldn't get past the notion that Livvie was not Caleb's first captive. He'd done this before to other girls & women all in aid of his quest to get to Vladek. And the fact that the "Flower Auction" is about obtaining virgins, leads me to believe that the ages of the captives is not a strict 18 out of some moral obligation to keep it on the legal age side. Girls. NOT women. Livvie being marked as "special" & having "got to him" for this story didn't take that ugly angle away & even if no one else cared about the others, their fates & Caleb's hand in it, I did. We have not so nice government funded facilities for people who kidnap, violate & sell people because those are actual crimes & Caleb is a perfect candidate to wend away his days in one.

Very early on in the story, I was hoping this was Livvie's recounting of what happened to her to the authorities. Her point of view read that way to me. I'm still hoping to find that it was so. She had my sympathies & that she further became a victim of Stockholm Syndrome was even more sad though completely understandable. I'd allow it for any person in that situation, but definitely for an 18 year-old highschool girl. She was not, to me, a reliable narrator because of the situation she was in. She vacillated between states. At one point, she mused that he had always been in control of himself with her & had always explained why he was doing one thing or another. Per the other POV supplying Caleb's story, this simply is not true. It's clear that Livvie does not have anything near the whole of her story, by her own words, but she allows herself sometimes to think that she does. She compartmentalized, rationalized & sometimes, idealized what had been done to her. That she wondered at why he was like this when he was so handsome & could surely get women easily, as if being good looking gave some sort of bye on being a sick soul, was sad & disturbing. Not in a "How can she think that given what he's done to her" but in a broader "No one should have that expectation & allowance to begin with" way. I couldn't get over the beating & the rape & the original stalking & kidnapping to consider anything that happened consensual on any level but allowed that she needed have her veil to view through. Coercion & want of survival negates any physical response, positive (or temporarily powerful) feelings toward Caleb that Livvie felt. He wasn't a choice. He was a self-imposed lack of options & one of last resort. If nothing else, it was an interesting character study of an abused & detached character. Actually two.

Caleb's part being told in third-person was a good device because I really didn't want to get any closer to this guy than I already was. It was a welcome & for me, necessary, distance. For all his supposed conflict & feelings for her, in the end his issues & personal vendetta against Vladek outweighed the damage he'd wrought on Livvie. She was just going to have to deal, because he had some unresolved stuff & this was the only way that HE was going to be free & better in the end. She was still another link in the chain of women he'd used to attain his goal. That he admits it doesn't make him sympathetic & neither does that little introspective attempt at the 94% mark. That she accepted the inevitability of it doesn't make her free. But I do applaud the author throwing in that Livvie was going to attempt to go all out wanton seductress to counter the coveted virginal thing. I didn't buy her capable or inclined to a sex romp a day after she endured a gang beating complete with boot bruises all over, cracked ribs & a dislocated shoulder but... okay.

I've seen a lot of reviews by women who've raved & loved this but I haven't seen the masses saying they were handing this over to their husbands & boyfriends to take notes to be more like Caleb (a la Christian Grey). I find that interesting. I wonder if, all other things being equal, there'd be so much swooning if Caleb had been described as physically unattractive, fat, sweaty & hairy in all the wrong places (kind of like Tiny, because really, where it counts, Caleb, Jair, Tiny (& Tiny's friends) aren't so different).

One thing that did bother me was that the author gives somewhat random toss-in of Livvie having a boyfriend & siblings that she loves so much & feels responsible for but we never get anything from Livvie even hinting that she misses them at all. Livvie never even mentions her boyfriend's name in her narration. Though we do get a lot of her missing & conflicted feelings about her mother. There are also a few typos & misused words sprinkled around ("us" instead of "we"; "that" instead of "than"). I also must say that I didn't feel romance here or anything erotic & I checked, I still have my all-girl card. I definitely don't have whatever it is that the majority of reviewing readers have that triggered "hot & sexy" read. I got the "dark" bit. I'm just glad that I was able to find it interesting & worth having read. All this said, I have the second book on my Kindle, so I am going to read that next.

Oh my goodness! I almost wish I was single and knew twins. I really enjoy Adriana's books and this one didn't disappoint. I like how whole menage was approached. This is one that I would read again just to get the rush.

Excellent works of writings!!!

This is a remarkable book on the lessons of the true God. The information provided in the book is exceptional. I was always a bit skeptical of religion but this book helped me to open my mind and see the truth about religion. I can honestly say that I feel empowered and unstoppable. The book breaks down the devil, the devil's ways and what God needs to do in order to be successful. The book emphasizes that there is NO mystery God or mystery devil and these two so called mystery entities already exist here on Earth. I have come a long way from being deaf dumb and blind (part of the 85%) - so what I am saying is that this is not the first book that I have read to gain knowledge of self but it definitely is one of the most powerful. In other words don't assume that you will attain everything you need to know from one book. However the book is written by multiple authors all hitting you with knowledge. One thing though I'd like to mention is that it talks about the consciousness of God (who is the original man). There are 5 levels of consciousness of the mind. I really wish that the author went more in to depth about these levels and although he has spent a lot of time explaining God (as most of the book is about this topic) I feel like there are still some unanswered questions and concepts that I wish the authors could delve in too more. Any book reader knows that when reading a book you will read about concepts that need more of an explanation usually from outside research. But this seems like it is such a radical topic against the ideologies of society that it is a bit hard to research some of this stuff outside of the book. However for the most part I have the gist of what the author(s) are saying and there is enough evidence in the book to make me fully believe I am God. - I Self Lord And Master.

Knowledge of Self

No matter how many reviews one may read or how many of one's friends will give good or bad compliments about a book, reading a book is a journey traveled alone. It can be a wonderful experience or a bad one. I expected much when I learned about "Knowledge of Self: A Collection of Wisdom on the Science of Everything in Life." However, I got much more than I paid for. That is a good thing. Quite honestly, the $10 price tag is a steal.

What Dr. Supreme Understanding Allah, C'BS Alife Allah, and Sunez Allah have compiled is a slice of life in the Nation of Gods and Earths (NGE). Contributors from all over the country have submitted essays, poems, recipes, and even prose about how the lessons provided by the NGE has helped shaped their outlook and apporach on everything in life. Gods and Earths young and old, neophyte and veteran, woman and man, convict and ex con, father and mother, and all other walks of life add on into this cipher.

It is unfortunate that almost everywhere one goes, the NGE gets a bad rap from nearly everyone. "Knowledge of Self..." comes at the right time. Like most anthologies, there is something for everyone. For those entirely unfamiliary with the NGE, this is a wonderful way to learn more about them. It is important to note two things. The first is the title. Nowadays, especially amongst those who consider themselves 'conscious,' the term Knowledge of Self (KOS) is thrown around loosely and can mean a great number of things. While the phrase is nothing new, it was the NGE that repopularized this term into the terminology used by many inside and outside these conscious circles. The second is that this book is historic just in its printing. To my knowledge, nothing like this has been done before.

The editors and the contributors to "Knowledge of Self..." cover a great amount of ground. Everything from Religion, Health, Martial Arts, Self Identity, and Ethnicity is discussed. It is a tremendous task that I find to be handled well. This book is an ambitious endeavor and everyone involved proved up to the task. As stated above, the price is a steal.

What I enjoy the most about this book is the fact that the contributors give the readers just enough to want more. This is tremendously important for the NGE. The NGE has prided itself on passing on their ideology orally. Each budding member is expected to memorize and later break down the information they are given. This is a vetting process that helps weed out those who seek knowledge for self gain. This book is a clear example of this.

For those completely unfamiliar with the NGE, prepare to learn a great number of things. Some of the information may be a little too much to digest. I only ask that each reader is patient. If anything, the reader will walk away with a better understanding of what the NGE stands for. No one is asking anyone to convert or drop everything one has learned. The editors are clear about this.

There are quite a few people who are familiar with the NGE and their ideology. Some of the information many not be new to them but each contributor provides new insight and applies the information differently then one may have heard. For example, there is an essay on the murdering of 4 devils. At one time, people took this as a literaly interpretation. Yet Supreme Understanding explains it as the killing of 4 vices and that the devil can be weaknesses that one finds within themselves be it drugs, money, sex, or other vices one cannot seem to control. Supreme Understanding takes an otherwise controversial teaching and applies it wonderfully to his own life.

The contributors also provide contact information in case the reader wants to ask questions or continue to build on a personal level. There is even a glossary to help readers with the terms. Overall, this author is highly impressed and will continue to reference this book in the future.

POWERFUL

This was a very informative read. I have read a few of this authors other works and I was not disappointed by this one. Knowledge Of Self further opened my eyes to a new way of thinking and informed me that I have more studying to do. The book was well written and very down to earth without the "twenty-dollar" words that so many authors use to impress people but actually end up going over their heads with. Kudos to the author and his assistants for putting together an informative and entertaining book. If you're looking to expand your level of consciousness or even to just expand your own thinking, look no further.
