Paintings That Speak

I was shocked, actually, how much I liked these paintings. I've seen other musicians artwork, such a Paul McCartney, etc. and I won't invalidate them as art, but my experience of those was that there was something missing. I am a painter, and student of painting, painters, art history. These painting seem to have it all, and I'm not one to lavish praise on lightly. They are full of heart, meaning, content, psychological expression. He paints like a musician. They are also very skilled, and it's nice to see paintings that contain both. So often we suspect, in these cases, that because someone is currently famous, they will just kind of be able to cash in on their name and ride the wave of fame, engage in whatever art form, and people will buy it, or want to view it. In this case, the work is worth seeing, is of high merit, and holds it own. Also, he somehow manages to to use watercolor in a way seems much more substantial than most. I was surprised to find out they were watercolor. At first glance, I suspected oil. It's as if it has texture, and this is certainly using watercolor pain in an innovative way

Like his voice, Bob Dylan's painted work can be an acquired taste. It (as with most of his creative endeavors) is my taste and I find the works in this book to be compelling and expressive. And I purchased this volume for such a great price, it's damn hard not to love it!

Melissa Brayden received her bachelor’s degree in film production and speech communication from Baylor University. She currently works full time as a theater director at the performing arts center of one of the largest high schools in the state of Texas, a job she completely enjoys. Recently, she’s fallen down the rabbit hole and rediscovered her love for creative writing.Melissa is married and working really hard at remembering to do the dishes. For personal enjoyment, she spends time with her Jack Russell terriers and checks out the NYC theater scene several times a year. She considers herself a reluctant patron of the treadmill, but thoroughly enjoys hitting a tennis ball around in nice weather. Coffee is her very best friend.

Karis Walsh is a horseback riding instructor who lives on a small farm in the Pacific Northwest. When she isn’t teaching or writing, she enjoys spending time outside with her animals, reading, playing the viola, and riding with friends.

Rachel Spangler (Author)
Rachel Spangler never set out to be an award winning author. She was just so poor and easily bored during her college years that she had to come up with creative ways to entertain herself, and her first novel, Learning Curve, was born out of one such attempt. She was sincerely surprised when it was accepted for publication and even more shocked when it won the Golden Crown Literary Award for Debut Author. She also won a Goldie for her second novel, Trails Merge. Since writing is more fun than a real job, and so much cheaper than therapy, Rachel continued to type away, leading to the publication of The Long Way Home, LoveLife, Spanish Heart, and Does She Love You. She plans to continue writing as long as anyone anywhere will keep reading.Rachel and her partner, Susan, are raising their young son in western New York, where during the winter they make the most of the lake effect snow on local ski slopes. In the summer, they love to travel and watch their beloved St. Louis Cardinals. Regardless of the season, she always makes time for a good romance, whether she’s reading it, writing it, or living it.

Brayden's story here was the best of the bunch

I know I am not a fan of short stories in this genre, but figured the wait was too long for the next full novel by Brayden.

Brayden's story here was the best of the bunch, but for me her witty bantering is teetering closer and closer to the edge of annoying.

I didn't like the other two stories as much, Spangler's mainly because I already had issues with the book it was based on. These issues continued here.

So yeah, lesson learned. Really only try shorts based on characters I liked the first time around. I'm guessing that someone who genrally likes shorts in this genre will like it.

The first two are good enough for the whole book.

Fireworks by Melissa Brayden. 4 stars
Lucy is the CEO of a large newswire service, who is comfortable in her life of privilege and protective of her work. Kristin has just moved to San Diego, and needs to crack a great story to cement her new position as reporter in the local paper. Sparks fly when they meet for the interview, but will they be able to find common ground when they have such different perspectives?

This is another charming tale by Brayden, who always delivers likable characters and delightful stories. However, this shorter story felt a little rushed in places, and I felt I wanted a little more depth to the characters. It was still a joy to read and lovely to see more of the characters introduced in Heart Block.

Getting Serious, by Rachel Spangler. 4.5 stars
Lisa has always been the comic relief, rather than Prince Charming. Having thrown the wedding for her best friend Joey and her new wife Elaine, Lisa is the boi of the ball in her tux. Meeting Elaine’s life coach Marty for the first time, Lisa finds herself captivated by the sophisticated and elegant Marty. Becoming the leading lady requires challenging how Lisa sees herself, and Lisa isn’t sure she can.

This is a charming, clever and often witty tale. Spangler gives us just the right amount of detail to make the story work. It was a pleasure to read and I really liked both the main characters, although Lisa is better developed than Marty. It was interesting to see the main characters from LoveLife in a different light, and to see more of Lisa, who is a winning character in her own right.

Risk Factor, by Karis Walsh. 2.5 stars
Myra runs a therapeutic riding program for returned soldiers. Ainslee is recently returned from Afghanistan where she was injured and had lost a leg. Still making the adjustment to her new prosthesis, physically and emotionally, she is struggling to come to terms with it all. Whilst in the roles of trainer and trainee, they both struggle with their immediate attraction to one another as well as their own emotional baggage.

This was the most problematic of the three short stories. The others were well resolved and the characters fun and engaging. The difficulty here is with the bigger hurdles the main characters have to overcome in a shorter story, and narrative time. The obstacles here seemed insurmountable rather than believable, and the characters prickly and unforgiving in their treatment of each other. It meant that I didn’t really believe any of it unfortunately. I liked the equine elements of the story, and Walsh always does well with that aspect of the narrative. Perhaps it was harder for me because I hadn’t read the original book, Worth the Risk, which had the romance between Myra’s best friend and her new lover, but this story didn’t work well for me.

Overall, I do think the first two stories are good enough to carry the book. I definitely recommend the first two stories, and will happily re-read them.

The three authors provided worthy sequels to their respective original stories. All three of them kept me glued to their plot development waiting to see how their stories ended and hoping that the three of them will create sequels out of these three stories. Here is hoping!

About the Author
Usher Abell, (1915-2003) was a violinist and native of Paducah Kentucky, where he learned the jazz style at an early age. Born on his grandfather’s tobacco farm where the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers join, he first heard hymns in the rural churches of Western Kentucky. He began to play these hymns in church as a young boy, continuing for nearly 75 years. He continued to play violin-- classical, jazz and sacred-- while studying for his music degrees and while serving as a musician in the Navy in World War II. In 1946 he began to teach violin at the University of South Dakota in Vermillion, where he eventually became Chairman of the Music Department. While there, he helped found what is now the National Music Museum and his wife, Barnes, who frequently accompanied him on piano, served as Chairman of the Board of the Museum for many years and helped with this compilation of hymns. After retiring from teaching violin at the University in 1976, he continued playing widely and began to write a series of books for Mel Bay: Jazz Violin Studies MB#93954 Jazz Violin Solos MB# 94821 Swing Fiddle Solos MB# 96198 Before his death in 2003, Usher Abell gave this collection of his favorite hymns to his son, Tom Abell, with the desire that they be published so that others might enjoy them as much as he had. Increasing amounts of data are being created, and there’s a need to store and process this data to gain competitive advantage. Hive is a popular platform for storing and analyzing big data on Hadoop. Hive tends to be popular because it uses a SQL-like syntax, familiar to many people. With plenty of built-in functionality, big data analysis can be done in Hive without advanced coded skills.

The book is aimed at both the beginner and the more advanced audience (data analysts, developers, and users). Some previous experience of SQL and databases is advantageous.

Chapter 1 Overview of Big Data and Hive

The chapter opens with a brief overview of the history of data processing, covering: batch, online, relational databases, and the internet. The latter has led to a massive rise in the amount of data being created, requiring new approaches to processing. This big data can be described in terms of various attributes including: volume, velocity and variety.

Big data tends to be processed on relatively cheap commodity hardware, using a distributed processing. Hadoop is a popular platform for big data processing. The chapter discusses the major components of Hadoop:

*Hadoop Distributed File System (HDFS) – storage system
*MapReduce – computing system (distributes processing and aggregates results)
*Associated components (e.g. HBase, Sqoop, Flume, Impala etc)

Having described how we arrived at big data and Hadoop, the chapter proceeds with an overview of Hive. a book with quite many well-designed examples

Given the hyped data science and big data framework buzzwords, the topic this book covers is definitely relevant and important to big data practitioners. The author appears to have a long and solid experience in the industry which gave him much practical knowledge on the subject. Having quickly skimmed through the book, my first impression is the book has a broad coverage of Apache Hive, ranging from the basic setup to security, data manipulation and the detailed explanation on the grammar, complemented with relatively straightforward examples.

My current feeling is, as a thin book of 200 pages, it did quite a good job.

this is really a good book to start reading

This is by far the most up to date book about Hive. It's been such a long time I've been waiting for a book to cover most stable and widely used Hive version. It is well written. All topics in each chapter are carefully picked and clearly presented for the all level of readers. You really do not need much programming or big data backgrounds to learn it. By reading the book, I strongly agree to the author that Hive will be the most important and popular tools of big data ecosystem for now and future. And most people can and should start the journey of big data from learning Hive. Of course, this is really a good book to start reading.

intriguing and inspiring

I was looking for a book on wild animal paiting and a friend of mine just picked this book from a shelf and said... I think this is like your taste.
After reading from cover to cover in just one night, I was impressed by the way I felt about the book. It has quite a lot of writing on it, but the kind of writing that inspires you to explore, think and feel about art and wild life art. It has hints, but not the kind of "take this for granted because it works". Instead, the book stimulates you to find out what suits you better, never creating rigid parameters.
Well, the overal feeling was that somehow Mr. Aldrich has written a journal about his toughts on art and wildlife art, and that he is kindly sharing his long way trip with the reader.
An awesome book and the one to which I come whenever I need a boost, not only for art pourposes, but also when I need a cheer up in my mood.

Great book on Wildlife Art!

This is a very special book. Aldrich covers everything an aspiring (or experienced) artist wants to know on the process of creating magnificant animal artwork. Aldrich's work is an inspiration to those of us who dream of creating a piece as beautiful as the ones that are on display in his book. The pictures alone are worth the price. On a practical note, I learned quite a bit by looking at the tools he uses, the different mediums (and combinations) and the step by step process (which includes pictures). I also highly recommend "Painting Animals that touch the heart" by Lesley Harrison. If you love Aldrich... you'll love Harrison.

The book is concise, it doesn't reinvent the wheel. It knows you want to paint and that you know some basics. It also has just enough review if you need it so that you have a quick overview. The strength of the book is that visual and text explanations really work, step by step is a plus also. I recommend it . You will get more out of it than most sets of instructional books give you. My work is better and I am happier for buying it. NormaJean
