Starred Review. Continuing her exploration of Southern cooking, Shay (Savannah Classic Desserts, Charleston Classic Desserts) turns her attention to seafood in this terrific collection of signature dishes from the restaurants of coastal Savannah. Organized by primary ingredient (crab, shrimp, oysters, fish, and scallops), Shay incorporates crave-inducing classics like She Crab Soup, Oyster Po Boys and a classic low country boil alongside new favorites like a rich seafood cheesecake drizzled with a balsamic reduction sauce, a Sweet-Potato Crusted Grouper with Peach Chutney, Pickled Shrimp, and an elegant Scallop Ceviche served atop an avocado mousse. Each contributing restaurant is profiled, including the culinary home of local celebrity Paula Deen (Lady & Sons, which offers their Crab-Stuffed Shrimp recipe). Directions are specific and easy to follow, ensuring home cooks will replicate dishes without worry. Though slim, this mouthwatering collection is stuffed with satisfying Southern dishes that will keep any seafood lover coming back. Color photos.

From the Inside Flap

From the sky, Savannah and the surrounding Low Country resemble an intricate silvery spiderweb of creeks, rivers, marshes, and streams that feed into the Atlantic Ocean. Twice daily, seven-foot tides sweep the intracoastal waterways, nourishing abundant oyster beds. It is a rich marine environment that yields a variety of fresh seafood, and Savannahians have been delighting in their coastal cuisine since the area was first settled in 1733.

In this delightful roundup of the city's classic seafood dishes, gathered from restaurants throughout Savannah, author Janice Shay has divided the featured recipes into the "major food groups"--crab, oysters, fish, and shrimp, with a nod to a few popular "carpetbagger" scallop recipes. From a hearty serving of Tubby's Boiled Shrimp to the complex flavors of Mrs. Wilkes' Seafood Casserole, Shay presents recipes the city's chefs have refined to perfection. They will delight any cook with their simplicity and freshness. Those unfamiliar with Savannah food will be surprised at the soups, stews, and chowders that define their culinary traditions as well as the constant competition among restaurants as to who serves the best crab cake. Dive in and enjoy food that the whole family will love!

Janice Shay is a book packager and the author of Pelican s Savannah Classic Desserts, Charleston Classic Desserts, and St. Patrick's Day in Savannah. She has won scores of national awards for her work as a graphic designer, and the children's books she has produced have been honored with the Jane Addams Children's Book Award, the Comstock Award, and the Oppenheim Toy Portfolio Gold Award. She lives in Savannah, Georgia: with her husband, Patrick.

Deborah Whitlaw Llewellyn is a professional photographer in Atlanta, Georgia. She studied at the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater in New York before becoming a freelance photographer. In addition to advertising and corporate photography, her work has been published in more than one hundred articles for numerous regional and shelter magazines, including Atlanta Magazine, Coastal Living, Veranda, Traditional Home, and Elle Dcor. She has photographed more than a dozen books, including Savannah Classic Desserts, Charleston Classic Desserts, and Atlanta Classic Desserts, all available from Pelican.

If you enjoy the great restaurants in Savannah this cookbook is for you. Some of the best restaurants in town have shared their recipes. I'm always experimenting to try to duplicate some of the dishes from Savannah restaurants and this cookbook had several of my favorite. I had seen it in a Savannah store, but waited to buy it online. Delivery was speedy and I am very pleased.

You Must Remember This, by Joyce Carol Oates

Joyce Carol Oates's epic novel of an American family in the 1950's probes the tender division between the permissible and the forbidden, between ordinary life and the secret places of the heart. Set in an industrial, working-class town in upstate New York, this book chronicles the frustrating marriage of parents Lyle and Hannah; the idealistic political journey of son Warren, and the passionate, obsessive relationship that develops between 15-year-old Enid Maria and her uncle Felix, a professional boxer twice her age. While brilliantly re-creating a decade that worshipped conformity, You Must Remember This presents the lives of family members that break every convention in the search for meaning and fulfillment.

From Publishers Weekly
Prolific writer Oates demonstrates awesome talent in her new novel, a family saga, set against the backdrop of conservatism that marked America in the 1950s. Through the actions of Lyle Stevick and his family, Oates creates a vivid portrait of bewildered, inarticulate people pushed against the narrow boundaries of their era by their emotions. Lyle is a man of small failures and smaller successes, a dealer in used furniture whose marriage is a continual reminder of one moment's misspent passion. He regards his brother Felix, a boxer, with cynicism born of envy. Lyle loves his children, but clearly does not know them. He is blind to his daughter Enid's affair with the virile Felix. Oates is not easy on her characters. She moves them through McCarthyism, backyard fallout shelters and illegal abortions, slapping them with harsh reflections of their weaknesses. Fully developed, they are described in language that is both elegant and gritty. The scenes between Enid and Felix add a pulsing, sensate eroticism. Infused with narrative energy, this is one of Oates's strongest books in many seasons. 50,000 first printing; major ad/promo; Literary Guild main selection.

The 1950's Is The Real Main Character
By Dai-keag-ity
Oates, my favorite writer, refuses to give in to those who would have us think the 1950's were a placid, contented decade of plenty for everyone. In truth they were fraught with perils, economic and social, and under the surface of post-war calm, the decade boiled with tensions that underlay the fears of the American psyche. In these pages, behind the tale of an incestuous love story of a teenaged niece and her half-uncle, a boxer who might merit a title shot, is the Red Scare, the fear of the bomb, the social intolerance of McCarthyism, and the terror of the consequences of straying from the norms the American culture had set.

My favorite scene in this book, and also its most frustrating, is when the father of the family at the heart of this energetic, moody novel, is taken into custody and ruthlessly interrogated by governmental agents, after he is reported for possible "Red sympathies". The cause of this detention? The man had opened an atlas at his store to show an ignorant, argumentative "true blue red-blooded patriotic American" that China, against which the US was at war in Korea at that time, was geographically larger than the United States.

In the '50's, that could be all it took to ruin someone's life.

You Must Remember This IS also the tale of a secret sexual affair between a teenage girl and her own father's half-brother. It begins with one of the most compelling and addicting ten pages in literature, as the girl undertakes a suicide attempt in her family's presence, in the dead of night. This action funnels any worthy reader in for at least the next hundred pages, at which point it becomes too late to turn back: Oates has already woven her spell.

You Must Remember This does not set out to be all things to all readers, but in its tale of tragic love, political intimidation and nuclear fears infiltrating the country's subconscious, it is very nearly that.

AN AMERICAN TREASURE
By Guy De Federicis
I ate these words up. Joyce Carol Oate's mastery of language is at the height of it's power in "You Must Remember This". I had to stop and seep in some of her truly inspirational prose, told in such a purposeful, matter-of-fact style, just to remind myself what a gifted writer can accomplish. A sometimes grey-clouded and bountifully absorbing novel depicting the human sexual condition under the colorless factory-lined skies of her native Western New York. I can't recall another book bringing the characters to such full-fledged living form as Ms. Oates does here. From what magic does she compose the radiating brilliance, sensitivity and brutishness, innocence and shrewdness of the character Felix, an ex-boxer who spends his life gallantly seeking the happiness deprived of in childhood. It would seem only a Boxing expert could delve into the mind striking constant chords of revelation and truths and opening the reader's mind to the insights and points of view of boxing. Or the character of Enid, a troubled, too deeply sensitive high-schooler whose mysterious mind and advanced maturity may reflect Ms. Oate's own childhood genius. These pages turn as fast as a high charged suspense novel, it's low-key slowly climaxing appreciation of the human condition result in an intimate bond with the characters and human nature itself. I feared the last handful of pages, so concerned was I that something tragic would happen to these tender, fragile charaters. As a Wesstern New York native I was delighted to read the countless descriptions, some bold others suggestive of this part of New York State where factory-lined horizons, still-water lakes and gaseous colors in the sky can be beautiful. I must say I found the title and conclusion of the book a bit vague but I trust Ms. Oates discetion and understanding that I will be remembering this for quite some time.

The REST API Design Handbook, by George Reese

Designing and implementing web services APIs has become a common part of every software engineer's job. The RESTful approach to web services design is rapidly become the approach of choice. Unfortunately, too few people have truly solid REST API design skills, and discussions of REST can become bogged down in dry theory.

The REST API Design Handbook is a simple, practical guide to aid software engineers and software architects create lasting, scalable APIs based on REST architectural principles. The book provides a sound foundation in discussing the constraints that define a REST API. It quickly goes beyond that into the practical aspects of implementing such an API in the real world.

Written by cloud computing expert George Reese, The REST API Design Handbook reflects hands on work in consuming many different third party APIs as well the development of REST-based web services APIs. It addresses all of the debates the commonly arise while creating these APIs. Subjects covered include:

* REST architectural constraints
* Using HTTP methods and response codes in an API
* Authenticating RESTful API calls
* Versioning
* Asynchronous Operations
* Pagination and Streaming
* Polling and Push Notifications
* Rate Limiting

From the Author
I work with web services of all stripes every day. My Dasein Cloud Java libraries talk to AWS, Rackspace, the HP Cloud, Terremark, Savvis, Joyent, Eucalyptus, CloudStack, OpenStack, vCloud, vSphere, Nimbula, EMC Atmos, Microsoft Azure, and even more. Some are SOAP-based, some are just random HTTP query-based, and some attempt to be RESTful. Few actually are useful, and all have their warts.

I spend a lot of time on Twitter complaining about the things I don't like. When I asked my followers what I should write my next book on, the answer was overwhelmingly that I should write one on REST APIs. This book brings Fielding's theories on REST architectures together with my practical experience in cloud API consumption and development. My hope is that it will help API developers everywhere build truly RESTful APIs and understanding why REST constraints are important in the real world.

About the Author
George Reese is the co-founder and CTO of enStratus Networks, provider of cloud infrastructure management software for enterprise security, governance, and automation. Mediocre on REST itself, dangerously wrong on crypto and security
By Marshall Pierce
The author has tried hard to make a useful reference on REST API design, and while certain parts of the book are acceptable, overall he has failed to provide a book that I would recommend to others as a guide. It is worth reading, but more as an opportunity for critique than as a source of gospel truth.

I'll start with the major issues and then proceed to smaller ones.

The author's coverage of security and how to use cryptographic primitives to handle request security is WRONG AND DANGEROUSLY INSECURE. Do not follow his advice on how to use SHA256 or anything else crypto-related; based on his suggestions he is not qualified to give advice on these topics. If you want to keep your API traffic secure, use TLS (properly configured -- see ssllabs.com for deployment best practices and a handy validator). If you cannot use TLS for some extremely good reason, you need to read "Cryptography Engineering: Design Principles and Practical Applications" (Ferguson, Schneier, Kohno) as an introductory text on designing cryptographic protocols. If that book hasn't persuaded you to simply use TLS and benefit from the hard work of experienced cryptographers, then it will at least give you a reading list of further advanced texts to refer to when designing your own protocol (which almost certainly won't be as good as TLS 1.2).

His coverage of authentication is correct in that it suggests using a finite-lifespan token. However, the fact that it does not cover OAuth 1 or 2 is bizarre for a book published in mid-2012. This is a serious omission since OAuth 2 (or 1) is likely to be a good fit for many modern REST APIs.

His coverage of HTTP PUT is incorrect. Using PUT to update part of a resource is WRONG as per the spec. See RFC 2616 9.6 ([...] for the RFC's coverage of HTTP PUT and RFC 5789 ([...] for HTTP PATCH. HTTP PUT may only completely replace the resource stored at a given URL, so his explanation of how to perform partial updates with HTTP PUT is not following the HTTP spec.

He does not cover matrix params at all, which is a shame as they are a useful option for doing pagination. His header-based approach is fine, but matrix params are right there in the HTTP spec as means of pagination.

His assertion that XML is better for large data sets due to easier streaming parsing is dubious. His recommended solution for JSON streaming involves generating invalid JSON. Streaming JSON parsers are no different from streaming XML parsers, and either format can be parsed in a streaming fashion.

I have other minor quibbles that I won't get into but they're just differences of opinion. The issues I've described above are basic factual errors or omissions.

A good introductory read, despite minor liberties with rfc 2616
By maxbirkoff
This is a reasonable read for someone who doesn't know what REST is all about. Reese does a good job writing about the general nature of REST. Unfortunately there is some opinion mixed-in with fact, which makes it difficult for an inexperienced reader to tell fact from opinion.

The whole document has a somewhat informal tone; it reads like I'm listening to Reese talk to a friend. At times I find that makes for an easier read, and at times I find the lack of formality a little... grating.

Reese does not seem to like the idea of POST updating a resource, despite RFC 2616 reading "The actual function performed by the POST method is determined by the server and is usually dependent on the Request-URI." I don't honestly understand how Reese can argue for PUT updating a resource; RFC 2616 seems to me to imply that PUT will put a whole new version of an existing resource.

I wish Reese had spent a little more time talking about the effect of intermediate HTTP caches on API design; in particular POST and PUT invalidating intermediate caches for subsequent GETs is an important concept, as it forces the API designer to model consistent resources supported by separate verbs.
