Empowerment rather than the opiate?

The word "Leadership" in the title of this book is the Trojan horse that suggests that those who are in or want to be in leadership positions order this book off the Internet and drag it within their mental and emotional gates. Reading it, we wake up to the fact that the leadership the authors speak of has nothing to do with (and everything to do with) leadership in the normal sense of the word. The key is the adjective that precedes it, i.e., "personal." The book is actually a presentation of a self-development methodology or spirituality of being and doing that consists of two principles (mindfulness and creativity) and six practices or steps for cultivating those principles.

The authors represent a training enterprise, Personal Leadership Seminars, LLC, whose programs are delivered by experienced interculturalists using the methodology described in the book. The methodology itself is a combination of humanistic psychology, spiritual disciplines and philosophia perennis that bloomed in the late 1960's and has continues as a subculture in the USA as well as abroad. There are no surprises here, just a well knit set of mental and emotional disciplines and an invitation to a community of support.

If not new, what is the currency of such training and a book about it? The key is, as the authors point out, practice. A bankruptcy of ethics and spiritual discipline as well as the deep desire for it has resulted in a search for fundamental well-being that has led many into extremes of religious fervor where self-immolation and Armageddon are seriously embraced and encouraged by the so-called political, religious, and military "leaders" of the day. So, Personal Leadership proposes an alternative set of spiritual practices aimed at bringing about awareness of self, one's internal and external environment and how the "others" live in them for us so that our responses are creative rather than destructive, real rather than stereotypical, affirming rather than conflictual.

We might say that "leadership starts at home" in the sense that enlightened leaders in politics, business and organizations will do well to have their personal act together if our world is to find its way out of the wars and destruction that much of its current leadership has presented it with.

But it is not only leaders who need personal leadership, in the sense that following the crowd and the demagogue is as much a part of the problem as are those who maladroitly direct the world scenarios. It is trite but true that people get the leaders they deserve.
So there is a set of values here that eschews knee-jerk certainties, "If you meet the Buddha on the road, kill him!" The silver bullet is practice, practice, practice. Shakyamuni's dying words are reputed to have been, "Be a lamp unto yourselves."

Today's psychologically-honed expertise for economic and political manipulation is not going unobserved. Naomi Klein in her recent book Shock Doctrine how a runaway economic paradigm enables political and financial leaders to manipulate populations through fear and misinformation. Psychologist Clotaire Rapaille, in The Culture Code points out how people around the world live and buy as they do behaving according to predictable culture codes, largely driven by unexamined unconscious urges--the lizard brain. In other words, great careers and great fortunes are to be made if the blind can be encouraged to invite the blind to lead them, and are satisfied with the cake crumbs that fall from their masters' tables. Whether one blows the whistle on these practices or strives to make a buck off them, the effect is the same, more of the same, more of the same...

This book shows us a way of stepping outside the maelstrom. It is long overdue, particularly in the sense that the intercultural field has largely ignored psychological and spiritual factors in the development of intercultural competence in personal development. This negligence has to a great degree contributed to the irrelevance and ignorance of intercultural work for religious, now become political contexts.
Personal Leadership is evidence that the Buddha and the Tao and Fritz Perls are still pointing the way to enlightenment for those willing to take the steps to seek it. The payoff of personal leadership is in the experience itself, as the many personal accounts of self-engagement in the book illustrate--the book is worth reading for these alone. Coming to see the self and the world more directly and clearly is empowering, but there is no cheap grace. Fortunately we learn to drag ourselves kicking and screaming, leading ourselves to places in and life where we have not been before.

In a sense, this is a book that I didn't know that I was waiting for until I read it--an impetus to do more and better of what has made me do somewhat well in directing my own life and enriching and empowering those around me.

"Letting this book into my psyche" strongly reminded me that Moses, Jesus and Mohammed have left great spiritual traditions with powerful disciplines for development that unfortunately lay dormant but capable of being aroused even in those whose starting point is fundamentalist and authoritarian. Who will have the creative flash that will lead to taking greater benefit from sunnah, theosis, the Exercitia Spiritualia and the halakah etc., in those traditions that so many people feel themselves a part of, the empowerment rather than the opiate?

Is it only me questioning how I could keep my enthusiasm and inspiration in living life with purpose and vision at the same level as I was reading a great book like "A New Earth" by Eckhart Tolle? I was thrilled to find the answer in this book, Personal Leadership! With a simple but profoundly practical methodology of two principles and six practices, Personal Leadership has given me a tool to improve my competency to take better actions for various challenges at work as well as to expand my personal life aligning with my vision.

About the Author
Luis Puigjaner�was a professor at Universitat Polit�cnica de Catalunya for 45 years and is now Professor Emeritus. He ran a basic process design course for engineers and an advanced course in process design and optimization for PhD students. In 1980 he started a research line in fluidized and entrained bed gasifiers. Since then, several projects have been carried out under his leadership (17 European Commission sponsored projects; 6 national projects financed by the Spanish government; 16 contracts with private industry). As a result of this activity 10 PhD theses in the topics of this book have been completed under his supervision, 47 articles have been published in indexed journals, 59 book chapters have been written and 75 presentations have been made at international symposia. Two plants have been designed for the private industry (30,000 Tn/year) and four pilot plants have been built.

Beautifully and delicately written!

When I opened this book my intention was to read a few chapters and then quickly go to bed. Little did I know Caylie had other ideas for my evening. A little more than 3 hours later, with tears streaming down my face, I had completed Parting Chances. The book was heart-wrenchingly wonderful and I simply could not put it down! Caylie has beautifully and delicately written a book that will tug at your heartstrings and show you the true meaning of love and acceptance. The impact it had on me was huge. I laughed out loud, I cried, and I loved every single word. I can’t recommend this one enough.

I want to marry Eli and have his babies.

If you liked Choose Us, you should read this book. If you didn't like Choose Us, you should read this book. For me, Parting Chances was a complete departure from Caylie Marcoe's debut novel. While I enjoyed Choose Us, I loved Parting Chances. It's darker, deeper, and the writing is more refined. The author was somehow able to balance out a sad story with the perfect amount of humor and light-hearted moments. Every element of this story worked together beautifully.

My prediction is that Parting Chances is going to be a huge success for this author.

Wow, what a heart wrencher. After Caylie's first book, a fairly feel-good lighthearted romance that I thoroughly enjoyed, I think I was expecting more of the same. But boy did she surprise me - and in a good way. This book is deep. It's serious. And I can't remember the last time I loved a book so much that made me bawl so hard.

Caylie's writing is awesome, particularly in the second half of this book. It's so honest, raw and real that you know it comes from first-hand experience, which makes it all the more poignant. It feels like she went on a personal journey through this and despite the crushingly sad subject she has the amazing knack of weaving hope, courage and enduring love through every chapter. She broke me down only to bring me back up and I absolutely loved this book, even though it made me cry buckets.

Now for those who don't like to have the storyline revealed I'd stop here. But those who like to get a little teaser before they read, keep going.

Haley's mom is ill - dying - at a time when she should be focusing on life at college, enjoying her independence, making mistakes, staying out all night, kissing boys, looking to the future and having the time of her life. And whilst this is the last thing she wants to be doing this is exactly what her mom wants for her. So she tries. She moves out of home, moves in with her bestie, gets a job and studies hard.

And although she's not exactly got the social life of the century, she does meet (or rediscover) a boy. Eli already knows that he could be absolutely perfect for her and he just wants to be there for her but she won't let her guard down and she won't let him in. Her heart is breaking at the thought of losing her mum and she knows it won't survive another blow but will she survive this without him ?

About the Author

Paul D. Allison, Ph.D., is Professor of Sociology at the University of Pennsylvania where he teaches graduate courses in methods and statistics. He is also the founder and president of Statistical Horizons LLC which offers short courses on a wide variety of statistical topics.

After completing his doctorate in sociology at the University of Wisconsin, he did postdoctoral study in statistics at the University of Chicago and the University of Pennsylvania. He has published eight books and more than 60 articles on topics that include linear regression, log-linear analysis, logistic regression, structural equation models, inequality measures, missing data, and survival analysis.

Much of his early research focused on career patterns of academic scientists. At present, his principal research is on methods for analyzing longitudinal data, especially those for determining the causes and consequences of events, and on methods for handling missing data.

A former Guggenheim Fellow, Allison received the 2001 Lazarsfeld Award for distinguished contributions to sociological methodology. In 2010 he was named a Fellow of the American Statistical Association. He is also a two-time winner of the American Statistical Association’s award for “Excellence in Continuing Education.”

This book is really useful for the Panel data including count data analyses. The author also provided various examples and syntax commands in each result table. It is not difficult to understand. Moreover, the author showed good interpretation for the regression results. In addion to the Fixed effects and Random effects models, the Hybrid model is also exhibited.

Nice walkthrough of FE regression models and how to do them

Excellent, easy to follow. In many cases you get examples of STATA code and output. This book does a great job at what other math and statistics books do poorly; explaining soundly, step by step (no frustrating missing steps "left up to the reader" crap), with a digestible writing style. If you were looking for a primer on just regression models, this would also do the trick.

Featured Guest Review: Niall Ferguson on Coming Apart

Niall Ferguson is professor of history at Harvard, a fellow of the Hoover Institution and the author of numerous books, most recently Civilization: The West and the Rest and The Ascent of Money: A Financial History of the World.

Since the advent of "Occupy Wall Street," there has been a tendency to assume that only the Left worries about inequality in America. Charles Murray's Coming Apart shows that conservatives, too, need to be concerned.

This is an immensely important and utterly gripping book. It deserves to be as much talked about as Murray's most controversial work (co-authored with Richard J. Herrnstein), The Bell Curve. Quite unjustly, that book was anathematized as "racist" because it pointed out that, on average, African-Americans had lower IQ scores than white Americans.

No doubt the same politically correct critics will complain about this book, because it is almost entirely devoted to the problem of social polarization within "white America." They will have to ignore one of Coming Apart's most surprising findings: that race is not a significant determinant of social polarization in today's America. It is class that really matters.

Murray meticulously chronicles and measures the emergence of two wholly distinct classes: a new upper class, first identified in The Bell Curve as "the cognitive elite," and a new "lower class," which he is too polite to give a name. And he vividly localizes his argument by imagining two emblematic communities: Belmont, where everyone has at least one college degree, and Fishtown, where no one has any. (Read: Tonyville and Trashtown.)

The key point is that the four great social trends of the past half-century--the decline of marriage, of the work ethic, of respect for the law and of religious observance--have affected Fishtown much more than Belmont. As a consequence, the traditional bonds of civil society have atrophied in Fishtown. And that, Murray concludes, is why people there are so very unhappy--and dysfunctional.

What can be done to reunite these two classes? Murray is dismissive of the standard liberal prescription of higher taxes on the rich and higher spending on the poor. As he points out, there could hardly be a worse moment to try to import the European welfare state, just as that system suffers fiscal collapse in its continent of origin.

What the country needs is not an even larger federal government but a kind of civic Great Awakening--a return to the republic's original foundations of family, vocation, community, and faith.

Coming Apart is a model of rigorous sociological inquiry, yet it is also highly readable. After the chronic incoherence of Occupy Wall Street, it comes as a blessed relief. Every American should read it. Too bad only the cognitive elite will.

Sadly This Book WIll Be Taught In History/Sociology Classes

Murray wrote "Coming Apart" almost 5 years ago and the book is wearing it's age well. It's a simple and compelling picture of America, not an argument, he is documenting changes not speculating on what caused the change.

Murray uses hard numbers to take a snapshot of the white working class (he only focuses on white American's in order to try to minimize the number of variables) to document the rise in social dysfunction and anomie in that cohort. Interesting the phenomenon captured by Murray echo William Julius Wilson work on black America decade ago.

The country's loss of values

This book is an eye-opener. Murray is an even-handed researcher and author who provides the reader with some great insights into where this country appears to be moving, and why we are drifting into a major reformation of values that does not bode well for our future. The book is loaded with hard-to-grasp statistics and graphic references which slows the reading, but does not interfere with understanding the authors primary objective. I would highly recommend it to anyone concerned with the current path of the US.

Every American should read this book

Charles murray set the stage for welfare reform with his extraordinary book, Losing Ground. Now he has set the stage for a revival of American civic culture and American Exceptionalism with Coming Apart. Murray usn't always easy to read but he is astonishingly rewarding if you are willing to think with him as he outlines his case.
