Great bone pathology book for the practicing pathologist

Great bone pathology book for the practicing pathologist! This is an outstanding text organized around basic patterns in bone pathology and radiology. There is abundant radiographic correlation and the text is generously illustrated with high quality images. Mostly focused on neoplastic bone pathology and mimics, but there are chapters on degenerative joint disease and crystal arthropathies also.

Very useful guide to bone pathology: pattern-based approach with beautiful illustrations

I still find bone pathology challenging, usually much more challenging than soft tissue pathology for a variety of reasons. The biopsies are often very small and fragmented, many of the tumors look alike, correlation with radiographs is essential, and there are so many non-neoplastic processes that are relatively subtle histologically. Even as a bone and soft tissue pathologist, I still find myself pulling out my textbooks several times per week when working up bone biopsies in my practice. Thus I need practical bone pathology textbooks with lots of high quality figures, a pattern based approach to diagnosis, and pragmatic advice on how to sort out difficult differential diagnoses. Practical Orthopedic Pathology is just such a book. Co-authors Andrea Deyrup (a former Sharon Weiss trainee like myself) and Gene Siegal (a distinguished bone pathologist at University of Alabama Birmingham) have created a fantastic comprehensive guide to the world of bone pathology. This book provides solid in depth coverage of the basics of normal bone anatomy, physiology, and radiology. I learned a plethora of fascinating factoids about how bone forms and why it looks as it does microscopically just from reading a few pages of the Normal Bone Anatomy chapter. I was also impressed by the very useful tips on proper histologic techniques for processing and cutting bone biopsy specimens. Radiology basics are also thoroughly reviewed in a practical manner accessible to the general pathologist. Discussion of imaging is tied back to the underlying pathology and there are tips for avoiding pitfalls. The heart of the book is a comprehensive text that covers the breadth of bone pathology. Rather than dividing the main text of the book into chapters based on specific entity names (e.g. – osteosarcoma, giant cell tumor, fibrous dysplasia), this book is organized into sections based on the major histologic pattern coupled with the radiographic pattern. Examples include: “Lesions characterized by osteoid deposition and non-aggressive radiology”, “Lesions characterized by cartilage deposition and aggressive radiology”, “Lesions characterized by large numbers of giant cells replacing trabecular bone”, etc. Specific entities are then discussed within those pattern-based sections. Useful tables discussing each of these patterns, the entities included in each pattern group, and pertinent histologic and radiographic mimics, are laid out at the very beginning of the book. It is a brilliant, practical approach to organizing a bone pathology textbook. One may not know the name of the entity just by looking at the slide, but if there are numerous giant cells replacing the trabecular bone, then it is clear which chapter is appropriate. Finally, and perhaps most importantly, the entire book is richly illustrated with beautiful high-quality color images of gross and microscopic pathology, as well as numerous black and white radiographic images. Summary: Practical Orthopedic Pathology is an outstanding addition to the Pattern Recognition series of pathology textbooks. I am very happy to own this book. Easy to read and understand and filled with valuable information to help you get and keep the attention of your desired audience

As the subtitle implies, Captivology is a book about capturing attention. It is a guide to understanding and implementing tips and practices that will attract and keep the attention of your desired audience.

Parr starts out by explaining why he wrote the book: “I wrote Captivology out of necessity. In my world–the world of technology and startups–attention often means the difference between success and failure. Startups need to catch the attention of busy investors. They need to secure the attention of the press to spread the word about their products. They need to captivate their users long enough to entice them to come back. Startups need to grab the attention of potential hires and keep them engaged once they join their team. Without attention, even a great startup with a compelling product will die. Attention is the fuel that drives great companies, causes, and ideas.”

With that in mind, Parr shares his considerable marketing skills in Captivology. Chapter one focuses on The Three Stages of Attention. Parr explains the difference between immediate, short, and long-term attention, and how each can be won, as well as the overall benefits. Successful marketing requires a balanced combination of all three.

In chapters two through eight, Parr spends time covering different attention triggers: automacity, framing, disruption, reward, reputation, mystery, and acknowledgement. Parr describes each trigger with scenarios to help you understand it in context, and also talks about the implications and how to apply the trigger effectively.

Captivology is clear and simple to understand. Parr conveys valuable information in a well-written, engaging style. One thing I think the book could use is a companion workbook. Captivology is filled with useful information, but it lacks a little in the area of how to use it. Granted, there is no “right way” or recipe that will work for every company, in every industry, in every instance–so expecting some sort of step-by-step guide might be unreasonable. When you finish Captivology, though, the challenge you face will be to translate it into “What does this mean for me?” and “How do I apply this information effectively?”

Captivology focuses on the science of capturing attention, and provides a solid foundation of well-researched information to back it up. Ultimately, though, marketing is also part art and part luck. It’s applying the right science in the right way at the right time. People are inundated with an overwhelming amount of data, information, and solicitations on a daily basis. You have to do whatever it takes to make your message stand out and capture the attention of audience. Captivology will help you do that.

Somewhat useful but falls short as a business book

If this were meant to actually be a science book, I would think this was an interesting book, but as the business book it aims to be, I think it falls short. The book gets more useful in its later chapters, but the beginning of the book mostly just confirms common-sense understandings of capturing attention by showing some science and examples underneath it. There isn't a lot in the first two-thirds of the book that inspired me to find unusual and compelling new ways to capture attention. For me to love a business book, it has to have serious aha moments every page or two. Instead, what I read in this book is a lot of name-dropping ("look how many important people I spoke to!") and a bit of self-puffery ("I call this concept [newly coined cutesy buzzword]"). Also, it happened enough times that I noticed, but his descriptions of women he profiled often included appreciations of their physical beauty ("raven-haired" appeared more than once), but I didn't see the same in his descriptions of men. The physical descriptions of the women bore no relationship to the wisdom they had to impart. Right now, as the wider culture is waking up to the strong disparities of the treatment of men and women in the tech industry of which he's part, it hurts to read.

Three stars because it's at least somewhat useful, but it's not a book I'm likely to return to for continued inspiration.

The Evolution Of A Hobby

.This coloring book is good even if you're not studying evolution particularly or taking a class that requires it. The pictures are quite detailed and take some time to color so it's really worth the effort and you'll get a lot of use from this book if you enjoy coloring or colored pencil work as a hobby. No the paper won't stand up to markers- but it's still a lot of fun.

Interesting and Informative

There is a lot of really interesting information about human evolution in this book. My only complaint is that it's printed on newsprint paper, so if you use markers as I do, plan on placing a blank sheet of paper between the current page and the next picture because the ink will bleed through. It's better to use colored pencils but I don't have those so the markers are my only option. I read the essay for each new picture before I complete the one before it so that I can actually read the essay without trying to see through/around the ink!

About the Author

Rev. James Martin, SJ, is a Jesuit priest, editor at large of America magazine, consultor to the Vatican's Secretariat for Communication, and author of numerous books, including the New York Times bestsellers Jesus: A Pilgrimage, The Jesuit Guide to (Almost) Everything and My Life with the Saints, which Publishers Weekly named one of the best books of 2006. Father Martin is a frequent commentator in the national and international media, having appeared on all the major networks, and in such diverse outlets as The Colbert Report, NPR's Fresh Air, the New York Times and The Wall Street Journal.  Before entering the Jesuits in 1988 he graduated from the Wharton School of Business.

A journey through the Holy Land and life of Jesus

Jesus: A Pilgrimage begins with an introduction that clearly lays out what the book is and more importantly, what the book is not. I point this out because, I generally go in with preconceived notions of what I expect or want from a book. Fr. Martin is quick to point out that this book is not a theological discussion on who Jesus is, nor is it a Bible commentary. This book, however, is a look at Jesus, as we see Him in the Gospels, through the viewpoint of Fr. Martin's education, experience, and a recent pilgrimage to the Holy Land. If we keep this in mind when reading the book, we can give it a proper review.

Each chapter is laid out in the same format. Fr. Martin first mentions the place he is going to visit. He then describes the journey there. Details from this include the actual process of travelling to the location, scenery along the way, and bits of the culture and environment he encountered. Then, comes the heart of each chapter - his reflections. Mixed with theology, history, tradition, and Fr. Martin's wisdom and wit, we put ourselves in the exact moment and location of Jesus and try and picture what it must have been like for both Jesus and those around Him. We then end with the Scripture passage which served as the basis for the site Fr. Martin visited.

The most interesting chapter in this book to me was entitled, "Nazareth." In this chapter Fr. Martin talks about the "Hidden Life" of Jesus. This term refers to the period of Jesus' life, age 12-30, that is absent in the Bible. Fr. Martin, like many, are drawn to this period of Jesus' life because they imagine it is a lot like our lives. "None of us is going to be preaching and performing miracles - at least not as Jesus did - but all of us live everyday lives, as Jesus did in Nazareth, being taught and cared for by our parents, loving and squabbling with our families, playing with our friends, learning what it means to be an adult, and in time earning a living." I never thought of Jesus in this light, but it does make sense. In this chapter, I also learned about just how small and poor Nazareth was. Knowing this, it really puts into perspective the disparaging remarks people make regarding Nazareth. It also shows you the environment Jesus grew up in, and influenced his parables.

Fr. Martin is an excellent storyteller. He does a fine job painting pictures of the places he visited, and he draws out details in the Gospels that one could easily miss. There were, however, parts of this book that I didn't enjoy. The beginning annoyed me a little when he waffled about wanting to go to the Holy Land. (Really what Christian, wouldn't want to see the place of Jesus?!) I also got bored in the beginning reading about the trek to get to each of their destinations, and would think to myself, "Hurry up and get there." However, I eventually accepted that that was the nature of this book as a personal pilgrimage. It would be incomplete to ignore the journey and focus solely on the destination. Those complaints aside, I still enjoyed the book. It was quite interesting to see Jesus, the Gospel passages, and the modern day Holy Land through the eyes of Fr. Martin.

Another winner by Fr. Martin

I've read several of Fr. Martin's books and this one is possibly the best one of all. I've always wanted to visit Israel and take in the sites and reading this book, I feel like I'm there with him. He writes with such humor, wit and insight that it is hard to put this book down. Like the author says, this isn't a theology book, but a book about his travels seen through the lens of his faith (as a Catholic and Jesuit priest) - but his writing is "down to earth" and accessible. He isn't writing it just for Catholics or Christians necessarily, so I think anyone with an interest in the Jesus of history and/or Jesus of faith will find something to like here. I've never met Fr. Martin but I think he would be an excellent teacher and a fun person to travel with - and all of that comes out in this book. I just wish he could write books more quickly so we didn't have to wait so long between them - ha ha!

Inspiring combination of travelogue, spiritual insights and Bible truths

I have laughed out loud, been moved to contemplative prayer on aspects of Jesus' life and brought to tears, and I'm not completely finished with this book. I have read several of Father Jim's books, and he continues in this one to write in easy to read but informative prose. I find it hard to put down. The book weaves his joyful enthusiasm for the Gospel with his personal travel to the Holy Land with a brother Jesuit. I felt like I was there with him in the crowded, noisy Church of the Nativity, riding with the cab driver in Bethlehem and also at the peaceful Bay of Parables. Father Jim is down to earth, intelligent, inspiring and funny and this book reflects all of that. If you don't have a copy, what are you waiting for?
