Outstanding advances have been achieved on Earthquake Geotechnical Engineering and Microzonation in the last decade mostly due to the increase in the recorded instrumental in-situ data and large number of case studies conducted in analyzing the observed effects during the recent major earthquakes. During the 15th International Conference on Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering held in Istanbul in August 2001, the Technical Committee of Earthquake Geotechnical Engineering, (TC4) of the International Society of Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering organised a regional seminar on Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Microzonation where an effort has been made to present the recent advances in the field by eminent scientists and researchers. The book idea was first suggested by the participants of this seminar. The purpose of this book as well as of the seminar was to present the broad spectrum of earthquake geotechnical engineering and seismic microzonation including strong ground motion, site characterisation, site effects, liquefaction, seismic microzonation, solid waste landfills and foundation engineering. The subject matter requires multidisciplinary input from different fields of engineering seismology, soil dynamics, geotechnical and structural engineering. The chapters in this book are prepared by some of the distinguished lecturers who took part in the seminar supplemented with contributions of few distinguished experts in the field of earthquake geotechnical engineering. The editor would like to express his gratitude to all authors for their interest and efforts in preparing their manuscripts. Without their enthusiasm and support, it would not have been possible to complete this book.

Van de Castle, former director of the Sleep and Dream Laboratory at the University of Virginia, presents the scientific facts surrounding dreams as well as some of the more prophetic, paranormal associations. He begins his well-organized text with a history of dreams, using such anecdotes as the revelation in a dream of the location of Kuwait's great oil reserves to a British political official. Van de Castle proceeds to describe modern dream theories of the 20th century with a particular emphasis on Freud and Jung. He continues with the current state of dream research and ends with the paranormal qualities of dreams. While books concerning dreams abound, this broad and intelligent work is highly recommended. Contrary to popular belief, the dream factory is not located in Hollywood's film studios but right in our own noggins. The brain's fantastic store of products parades by one's eyelids, and here a dream researcher dips into the trove of reports that people have made. Portentous or picayune, all dreams are valid to Van de Castle, who after lollygagging through a hundred pages on famous dreamers (Plato to Patton), finally gets down to the meat of the matter: interpretation. It was popularized by Freud, who invented such stalwarts in the analytical vocabulary as "wish fullfillment." Van de Castle, even more analytical, dons the white coat to summarize what lab studies, including his own, have revealed about the physiology of dreaming, the themes in dreams and their whole symbology, and gender-specific patterns. More speculatively, he ponders the premonitory and telepathic powers of dreams. The author's solid knowledge, encompassing such diverse subjects as ancient omens and modern statistics, and enthusiastic lucidity beckon a huge readership. Gilbert Taylor

My Dream Text Book!

Of all the books I have about dreams Our Dreaming Mind has the most comprehensive research. Unlike other dream books that are use to promote the author point of view; Dr. Van de Castle uses facts and research to promote his claim. ***I believe most people don't remember their dreams, some or all, because they can't handle how far their dreams take them.*** Anyone that can easily remember their dreams and has a bit of a scientific mind will be overjoyed that some scientist is taking dreams seriously. I use this book as the core text for my dream study. Thank you Dr. Van de Castle!!!

Growing up in midtwentiethcentury Italy

Brilliant, modest but very famous author, who is able to write with humor about growing up in her brilliant, illustrious family. Not ashamed to admit failings of herself or family members. Her Italian is accessible to the intermediate reader. Many words are not in the dictionary, however, as they are specific to her family. She was clearly a nerd growing up, home schooled until middle school, not ever very energetic but left a legacy of stories about life under Mussolini, WWII, & beyond, interacting with major literary stars in the postwar period. Interesting that she is known as a Jewish author in Italy, but her Jewish father had no interest in religion nor Jewish heritage as far as I can tell, was an atheistic, focussed intellectual with no interest in the arts. Her mother was a non-practicing catholic and probably a culture vulture. The family hobnobbed with the Italian intelligentsia, which included many of Jewish ancestry. Her writing reflects much of life in midcentury Italy & seems to be known by all Italians.

Ginzburg's Lessico famigliare

Ginzburg's Lessico Famigliare (Family Sayings in English) is one of the most beautiful, sad, funny, touching, powerful novels of the twentieth century. It focusses on what its title says it focusses on -- the little sayings, catch-phrases, that every family has, that make up the family lexicon, and that her family had an abundance of. Just out of focus, beyond the brightest light of the narrative, are the events of the times -- the rise of fascism, the Second World War, the Mussolini racial laws. In between are the family's experiences -- births, deaths, marriages -- and characters -- her parents, siblings, friends, husband. The seemingly inessential turns out to have great import, and the incredible understatement that results from not focussing on great events paradoxically gives those events an overwheliming reality.

Not focused enough

I was somewhat disappointed by this book, which is supposed to be Ginzburg most famous novel. Even though it is essentially a biography I still expected it to have a logic plotline, such as was the case in let's say Frank Macourt's Angela's Ashes. In Frank Macourt's memoir it was clear where the plot starts and how it is directed. Lessico famigliare mainly deals with the small details of life. For example, her mother's showering with cold water or Natalia being unable to give orders to her housekeeper. There is nothing wrong with giving those details, which could make the novel more human and vital. But when there is not much more than details the reader is bound to feel confused, or at least I was. It is basically a matter of proportion. She spends more time on describing her mother taking piano lessons than on her own entire married life!

Awesome Value

This book is so awesome. 1,023 pages of guitar tab that separately would cost much more than 29.95. From Aerosmith to ZZ Top, this book covers some of the best songs I know. Unlike other books, this one crosses several music genres: Folk, oldies, hard rock. For the 29.95 that I paid, I feel like no other tab book is close to this 150 song collection.

This volume (and the others, which I own) contains a pretty good mix of songs and artists. This isn't a "Best Of" compilation, so you are going to see some B-side songs you won't be familiar with. But there are enough classics to keep you happy.

I checked out Youtube clips for some that didn't receive air play in my youth, and found that I liked them and have some new favorites.

The tabs are pretty accurate. Purists will complain that they don't match how it was played on one album or another, or in a live performance, but the artists themselves never played it the same way twice either (how many takes do they record in the studio before deciding which to put on the album?).

You will enjoy this and the other volumes, and it is a good value for the number of songs you get.

About the Author

Naomi Kryske graduated from Rice University, Houston, Texas. Following her husband’s retirement from the U.S. Navy, she lived on the Mississippi Gulf Coast until 2005, when Hurricane Katrina destroyed their home. The Mission is the second of her crime/suspense novels set in London, involving the Metropolitan Police, and exploring the themes of trauma and recovery. In 2008 she ward awarded a grant from the Melissa English Writing Trust for her first novel, The Witness. She lives in north Texas.

A fascinating police procedure story

The Witness is an amazing story of a woman who survives a brutal attack and the police unit that protects her while the attacker's trial proceeds. It follows the course of the investigation, trial and conviction of a serial killer and presents a detailed view of the struggles of the victim to overcome shock and recover from the effects of the attack and later the grueling trial. It is a true-to-life, accurate look into the techniques used to successfully prosecute such heinous crimes and the effects on the police who have to deal with these crimes.

Must read!

This is a powerful narrative of pain, shame, blame and acclaim! The heroine goes from pain to shame and blame, and then to acclaiming a strong faith in a Supreme Being! Because of the loving and caring attention she receives from some unlikely friends and protectors, the victim is able to draw courage and strength to perform a most uncomfortable and stressful part as a witness to a horrible crime. Excellent reading and surprising ending.

Gripping Legal and Psychological Drama

This book was a surprise find. I am usually bored by legal dramas, but this was fascinating. There was old-fashioned suspense - would the bad guy be arrested, convicted, etc. - that is more or less standard. But the psychological suspense and drama was absolutely gripping. The story of a woman recovering from severe trauma was neither romanticized nor sensationalized. Instead the author gave us a realistic and compassionate account that draws the reader in. This is a multidimensional view that engaged the brain as well as the emotions and gave me insight into the difficultly of recovering from trauma. We also see into the minds and hearts of those who are helping her, which makes the reader feel like a part of the team that surrounds the main character.

I was also fascinated by the portrayal of the British legal system. Clearly the author has done her homework and gives us enough detail to enable us to understand what is happening and why it would seem so strange to an American, without overwhelming us with so much detail that we get lost! (I've had that complaint about other books.)

This is the first of a trilogy. I can only hope that the next book will be quickly forthcoming! I want more of these characters.

You will probably not have heard of Naomi Kryske before reading this novel. But once you do, you will want more as well.
