Deutsche Lufthansa is one of the most important airlines in the world, with a long and diverse history that goes back to 1926. The visual identity of Lufthansa is just as long and diverse. The beginning of the 1960s saw one of the most important steps in the development of corporate communication. The company employed the designer Otl Aicher and his Gruppe E5 student group to develop a visual identity for Lufthansa. It was substantially realized in 1963 and up until the present day counts as one of the most groundbreaking corporate design solutions of the 20th century. With a focus on the famous brand identity, the design and advertising history of Deutsche Lufthansa from the 1920s to today is comprehensively documented here for the first time. This volume contains numerous illustrations from the corporate archive and background articles and interviews.

Very Light Reading
By R.M.F.
This book is very underwhelming...and misleading.

Billed as a book about the "groundbreaking study" conducted by Otl Aicher and his students, there's less than 20 pages of snippets from the actual study (which are split into German/English, so more like 10 pages). On top of that, most of the work featured in the book is pre- and post- Aicher...which is pretty mediocre.

Most of the artwork/samples in the book are shown as 1-inch thumbnails.

All in all, not a very thorough book on corporate design. Not even close to being worth the value of the list price.

Up in the air
By Robin
A worthwhile overview of this world-class airline's corporate look though the small size of the pages is not the best way to present all the interesting visual material.

Lufthansa corporate look really begins in 1963 when the management implemented design proposals put forward by a design team from Ulm design college under the direction of Otl Aicher. The reputation of the Ulm student design group was sufficient to let this to happen. The design proposals allowed the airline, by 1967, to be one the world's most forward looking commercial carriers. The first pictorial section of the book shows the evolution from a rather haphazard graphic design approach, especially with paintings for posters, to a much tighter and simpler graphic style using photos, flat color panels and clean typography.

The book's next section (printed on sixteen pages of orange paper) use excerpts from the Ulm design study. It seemed to be particularly thorough, covering every aspect of the airline's graphic look. The rest of the book looks in detail at various design manuals over the years, modifications to the logo from Helvetica Medium to Semi bold (and cutting part of the horizontal of the L so that it gave a tighter optical fit with rest of the logo) lots of ads and menu designs. In 1979 the airline's ad department did a design overhaul and created an even more comprehensive look which lasted up to 2000 when the Californian company Design Management Online took Lufthansa into the digital age with an online design manual. Unfortunately there are only two small, unreadable examples of the DMO work.

The last pages have some interesting comments from seven designers about the Lufthansa look, a company timeline and a book and article listing but no index.

I have mentioned the small page size and consequently small photos and graphics but also a small text size that makes reading the book very hard (so four stars). Six point type is just too small and annoyingly there is plenty of empty page space to allow for a larger size and for that matter bigger images throughout the pages. Oddly the book's Introduction is set in a quite readable eight point type.

Though the book is a paperback it has a jacket. Remove this and it unfolds to a mini poster with a mono graphic on one side and on the reverse seven colored profiles of the Lufthansa jet fleet with various livery options suggested over the years.

Aviation History - A rare view inside the development of a major airline's logo and design. Wonderful!
By Greg
While the lengthy review given by Robin Benson is apt, one does have to ask: where are ANY other airline livery books? A study on Pan American would be great, but one doesn't exist. There are some valid points raised by Robin, but the Ulm study itself by Aicher of 1962 and the corporate design manual of 1963 are very, very rare and most likely the airline would not let you look at the corporate design manual. While it is a small study with an excerpt of the Ulm 1962 study, is it not better than nothing at all? R.M.F's review also has good points, but again, even a little is better than nothing. Who knows, maybe since THIS little book exists, it might lead to a new and better one in the future. For myself, I would rather have a magnifying glass than look tirelessly at internet pictures (but those DO help...)
There are some upsides though: the dimensions of the logo and its history, the typography of the name and the design dimensions, the fonts used and some official design pictures give the book a push in the positive direction.
For myself imwould say it is a good book on the visual history of Lufthansa. Should still be in print! Poster/cover a great plus. Would reccomend to any aviation historian or graphics art/typography student. As an avid user of Donald Knuth's TeX typography program for math and general text, I do enjoy this book. Again, where is any other book on any other airline?

Corporate FINANCE

Corporate Finance: Theory and Practice continues to hold sway as one of the most popular financial textbooks available, thanks to its four unique features:

  • A balanced blend of theory and practice: the authors hold academic positions at top-ranking universities and business schools and are also financial managers, private investors or sit on the boards of listed and unlisted companies.
  • A presentation of concepts that explain situations, followed by a discussion of techniques in a direct and succinct style.
  • Content enriched by the www.vernimmen.com website, which, with 1,500 daily visitors, is one of the world's leading sites for teaching finance.
  • Free monthly finance updates with The Vernimmen.com Newsletter, which currently has over 60,000 subscribers.

The authors draw on their dual experience to enhance and expand the content of this book through the inclusion of new chapters on financing start-ups and implementing a debt policy.

"I discovered finance with 'The Vernimmen' about 30 years ago. Since then the different versions have accompanied me throughout my career and throughout the world. Not only was the alignment of the successive editions looking good in my different offices but I must confess I have opened and cherished each of them. Whether an investment banker, a CFO in a universal bank, or, more simply, a world banker…"
—BERTRAND BADRE, MANAGING DIRECTOR AND CFO OF THE WORLD BANK

"I opened my first Vernimmen in 1982. After having spent just a few weekends reading it, I felt better equipped for my role in financial management at Paribas. Now at Apax, the Vernimmen remains my companion in my search for value creation (key in the private equity industry)."
—MONIQUE COHEN, ASSOCIATED DIRECTOR, APAX PARTNERS

"Vernimmen's Corporate Finance is an outstanding clear and complete manual, a wonderful merger of practice and theory. Its coverage of the market aspects of corporate finance distinguishes its content, but its treatment of all the material makes it essential reading for the student, financier or industrialist."
—HOWARD JONES, SENIOR RESEARCH FELLOW IN FINANCE AT SAÏD BUSINESS SCHOOL, UNIVERSITY OF OXFORD

"The book itself covers all the important techniques that a financial manager must have in his repertoire of tools. The exposition is clear and concise and, most importantly, relies on commonsense reasoning throughout. This is not a book with obscure formulae, yet is still rigorous and at the same time a model of clarity."
—RICHARD ROLL, JOEL FRIED PROFESSOR OF APPLIED FINANCE AT UCLA ANDERSON

Brilliant!

Fantastic! Really helpful and extremely well explained. I am a Business Administration graduate so I can't say how easy it will be for someone without any economic background to understand its concepts but I can't do anything but recommend it to everyone wanting to learn more about financial concepts.

A corporate finance
By Mehdi SETHOM
The book's called "Corporate Finance - Theory and Practice" and it is, in my view, an excellent work for practitioners in the field. Unlike the other great tomes on the subject, it provides them with full explanations of the techniques involved, real time updates in a world of finance that is constantly changing, and an accounting environment undergoing a radical overhaul with the introduction of the new IFRS.

Comments that the book fails to provide an in-depth analysis of the Modigliani and Miller's propositions and of portfolio theory don't even bear mentioning. Criticising it for its weakness in capital budgeting using the real options method or the scenario analysis and Monte Carlo simulation is laughable from the point of view of the practitioner. In fact, the whole market agrees that these methods are very difficult to put into practice.

The real options method, for example, is only applicable in two or three clearly identified sectors (and is no substitute for traditional methods) given the difficulties involved in determining its parameters for a real asset. Stating that the volatility of a real project can be calculated simply by historical regression of the same series of data used for calculating the parameters of the cost of capital, is not credible for at least two reasons: i) the volatility of an asset is of course linked to its beta (and obviously not to market risk premium), but is not equal to it as it does not integrate the elements of risk specific to the asset and the volatility of a real asset cannot accordingly be approximated by the average volatility of companies in the sector, ii) only a prospective approach is recognised by the market today, and a historical estimation cannot be defended. Similarly, estimating the convenience yield for a real asset, a fundamental parameter for the real options method, is far from easy and is clearly not based on the same data as those used for calculating the cost of capital. The sensitivity of the method to its intrinsic parameters could easily lead to an over-valuation of the underlying real asset compared with a valuation carried out using the DCF method, which, despite its shortcomings, remains the only method that is universally used/recognised by the market.

In conclusion, I found this to be a very comprehensive work which will fully meet the expectations of practitioners, especially when combined with the regular updates on its website ([...]) considered to be one of the best in the world by [...] and its monthly newsletter, in the constantly changing world of finance.

Disappointing text
By M. A. G. Dias
This text is too weak at least in important topics like capital budgeting (risk analysis and real options, mainly), MM propositions and portfolio theory.

The part on "scenario analysis and Monte Carlo simulation" took less than two pages, but the authors made a recommendation that is a big mistake: "the Monte Carlo Simulation should discount cash flows at the risk-free rate" to calculate the NPV distribution. This is true only if the cash-flows were simulated with risk-neutral stochastic process (i.e., processes with drift penalized by a risk-premium), but the book was referring to "real probability" simulations, so that the book statement is a mistake.

Other example, the infantile critique on real options (p. 814): they associated real options (RO) with the internet bubble in 2000, and that RO explained that very high values. Of course RO adds the flexibility value to NPV, but the serious RO literature never supported that bubble. The perhaps best known RO article on internet firm valuation (on Amazon.com value) was Schwartz & Moon (Financial Analyst Journal, May/June 2000): using RO they estimated a price equal to $12.42, whereas the "bubble" stock market price (in 1999) was $76.125, a big difference... (see also Hull, 6th ed., p. 718).

Other RO critique that I don't agree is: "estimating ... volatility, opportunity costs, etc., can be complicated". Apparently, the authors don't know that if you have data to estimate the risk-premium for the discount rate (using CAPM concepts, for example), you can use the SAME time series to estimate volatility. The popular approach to estimate this volatility is just a simple linear regression. In short, if the market is complete enough to calculate the traditional NPV, so is for RO valuation.

There are much better textbooks available. The traditional Brealey & Myers' textbook remains an excellent choice, mainly for capital budgeting topics.

Other good textbook alternatives are Ross et al (mainly for financial decisions, agency, etc.), Grinblatt & Titman (great in risk management), Bodie & Merton (introductory) and Benninga (Financial Modeling, a practical and correct book).

Carbon Nation: Fossil Fuels in the Making of American Culture (Culture America (Hardcover)), by Bob Johnson

Fossil fuels don’t simply impact our ability to commute to and from work.

They condition our sensory lives, our erotic experiences, and our aesthetics; they structure what we assume to be normal and healthy; and they prop up a distinctly modern bargain with nature that allows populations and economies to grow wildly beyond the older and more clearly understood limits of the organic economy.

Carbon Nation ranges across film and literary studies, ecology, politics, journalism, and art history to chart the course by which prehistoric carbon calories entered into the American economy and body. It reveals how fossil fuels remade our ways of being, knowing, and sensing in the world while examining how different classes, races, sexes, and conditions learned to embrace and navigate the material manifestations and cultural potential of these new prehistoric carbons.

The ecological roots of modern America are introduced in the first half of the book where the author shows how fossil fuels revolutionized the nation’s material wealth and carrying capacity. The book then demonstrates how this eager embrace of fossil fuels went hand in hand with both a deliberate and an unconscious suppression of that dependency across social, spatial, symbolic, and psychic domains. In the works of Eugene O’Neill, Upton Sinclair, Sherwood Anderson, and Stephen Crane, the author reveals how Americans’ material dependencies on prehistoric carbon were systematically buried within modernist narratives of progress, consumption, and unbridled growth; while in films like Charlie Chaplin’s Modern Times and George Stevens’s Giant he uncovers cinematic expressions of our own deep-seated anxieties about living in a dizzying new world wrought by fossil fuels.

Any discussion of fossil fuels must go beyond energy policy and technology. In Carbon Nation, Bob Johnson reminds us that what we take to be natural in the modern world is, in fact, historical, and that our history and culture arise from this relatively recent embrace of the coal mine, the stoke hole, and the oil derrick.

Review
"A concise, compelling account of a paradox—how today’s knowledge of ecology and energy bring positive environmental change well within the range of possibility, and how at the same time modern culture evinces and intractable resistance to letting go of fossil fuels. On these terms, Carbon Nation makes a remarkable contribution to the growing field of energy studies in history and elsewhere in the haumanities."—Journal of Interdisciplinary History

"At a time when climate change has focused much of our attention on the economic and environmental impacts of a carbon-based economy, Johnson examines instead its influence on American culture. the result is a thought-provoking journey through the past that makes useful contributions to cultural history and to the growing discipline of energy history."—American Historical Review

"Johnson calls on a vast array of sources to effectively demonstrate the primordial fear and loathing that festers within the orchestrated embrace of US society and fossil fuel's hard energy path. Mandatory for energy and society scholarship."―Choice

"Bob Johnson examines the shift away from renewable energy to fossil fuels during the century before the energy crisis of the 1970s, and he explores the ambivalent cultural consequences of that transformation, as Americans sought to ignore its environmental costs as they embraced a narrative of technological empowerment"—David E. Nye, author of Technology Matters

"Armed with a dazzling array of facts and the insights of cultural criticism, Bob Johnson probes the subsoil ecology of the modern self, those psychic and material traumas that comprise the deepest collateral damage of our now international carbon economy."—Stephanie LeMenager, author of Living Oil: Petroleum Culture in the American Century

"Johnson has crafted a unique and exciting interdisciplinary treatise on the concept of energy in American life that profoundly informs our understanding of the basic cultural patterns of twentieth-century living. His writing style is spry and intelligent, while his insights are provocative and terribly important and should inspire scholars in a number of fields."—Brian Black, author of Crude Reality: Petroleum in World History and Petrolia: The Landscape of America's First Oil Boom

Introduction to Nanophotonics, by Sergey V. Gaponenko

Nanophotonics is where photonics merges with nanoscience and nanotechnology, and where spatial confinement considerably modifies light propagation and light-matter interaction. Describing the basic phenomena, principles, experimental advances and potential impact of nanophotonics, this graduate-level textbook is ideal for students in physics, optical and electronic engineering and materials science. The textbook highlights practical issues, material properties and device feasibility, and includes the basic optical properties of metals, semiconductors and dielectrics. Mathematics is kept to a minimum and theoretical issues are reduced to a conceptual level. Each chapter ends in problems so readers can monitor their understanding of the material presented. The introductory quantum theory of solids and size effects in semiconductors are considered to give a parallel discussion of wave optics and wave mechanics of nanostructures. The physical and historical interplay of wave optics and quantum mechanics is traced. Nanoplasmonics, an essential part of modern photonics, is also included.

Review
"Sergey Gaponenko has produced a breathtaking and timely book that is just perfect for graduate-level students, or for the senior person wanting to know more about the field. The book has just the right tone and covers the material with an experimental focus hitherto not seen."
Jonathan P. Dowling, Hearne Professor of Theoretical Physics and Co-Director, Hearne Institute for Theoretical Physics, Louisiana State University

"This book plays with the beauty of analogies between electronic and photonic systems. The unconventional view on problems of modern science will attract the readers' attention and interest. The book provides an excellent overview about the emerging field of nanophotonics for students and researchers in academia and industry."
Ulrike Woggon, Technische Universitat Berlin

"The clarity of nanophotonics concepts and their physical embodiment as presented by Professor Gaponenko, are the main assets of this excellent book. It thus provides a sound base to explore the potential of nanophotonics, to enable contributions to its future developments as a discipline and also to envisage applications. Essential reading for all practitioners of nanoscience and nanotechnology."
Clivia M. Sotomayor Torres, Catalan Institute of Nanotechnology

"This book is a tour de force: it takes the reader all the way from introductory wave physics to advanced topics involving the interaction between light and matter. Sprinkled throughout are descriptions of how physics developed in the 20th century, the connections between quantum physics and electromagnetic waves, and the author's views on these themes. "
Martijn de Sterke, University of Sydney

"There are several books that deal with selected aspects of this exciting and emerging field, but this is the first that covers nanophotonics in a comprehensive fashion. The treatment is rigorous, accessible and entertaining, so appeals to specialists and graduate students alike."
Thomas F. Krauss, University of St. Andrews

"This book is a logically well organized, rigorous, and comprehensive introduction to the broad and stimulating field of nanophotonics. The Spy Who Couldn't Spell: A Dyslexic Traitor, an Unbreakable Code, and the FBI's Hunt for America's Stolen Secrets, by Yudhijit Bhattach

The thrilling, true-life account of the FBI’s hunt for the ingenious traitor Brian Regan—known as the Spy Who Couldn’t Spell.

Before Edward Snowden’s infamous data breach, the largest theft of government secrets was committed by an ingenious traitor whose intricate espionage scheme and complex system of coded messages were made even more baffling by his dyslexia. His name is Brian Regan, but he came to be known as The Spy Who Couldn’t Spell.

In December of 2000, FBI Special Agent Steven Carr of the bureau’s Washington, D.C., office received a package from FBI New York: a series of coded letters from an anonymous sender to the Libyan consulate, offering to sell classified United States intelligence. The offer, and the threat, were all too real. A self-proclaimed CIA analyst with top secret clearance had information about U.S. reconnaissance satellites, air defense systems, weapons depots, munitions factories, and underground bunkers throughout the Middle East.

Rooting out the traitor would not be easy, but certain clues suggested a government agent with a military background, a family, and a dire need for money. Leading a diligent team of investigators and code breakers, Carr spent years hunting down a dangerous spy and his cache of stolen secrets.

In this fast-paced true-life spy thriller, Yudhijit Bhattacharjee reveals how the FBI unraveled Regan’s strange web of codes to build a case against a man who nearly collapsed America's military security.

Great Story About A Spy You've Never Heard Of
By M.Frankel
When it comes to spies in the US Intelligence Community, most have heard of Aldrich Ames and some have heard of Harold Nicholson. But I'm guessing few, if any, have heard of Brian Regan, who planned to sell thousands of classified documents to foreign governments.

Yudhijit Bhattacharjee does an exceptional job of bringing this story to life in exquisite detail in this well-researched and easily readable thriller. Bhattacharjee tells the story simultaneously from the perspectives of both Regan and lead FBI investigator Steven Carr, providing a gripping look at both the caper itself--and the myriad reasons why Regan decided to pursue traitorous activities--and the race against the clock to prevent Regan from accomplishing his goal.

Bhattacharjee makes this subject, which can be complex at times, extremely readable. My only minor complaints are that the author has the occasional tendency to engage in gratuitous editorializing, and that the book does not explore in enough depth the security measures that Regan had to face to maintain his security clearances.

In short, a great read for anyone interested in spies, spy hunts, codes, foreign policy, or the US Intelligence Community.

Headed for Hollywood!
By SFinlay
The Spy Who Couldn’t Spell is bound for the Hollywood’s big screen. This engaging story of Washington intelligence intrigue is masterfully woven by Bhattacharjee with a tale of personal torment. The story simultaneously conjures compassion for the prime character—convicted spy, Brian Patrick Regan—alongside contempt and disdain for his willingness to sell out his country. This true story reads like a Tom Clancy novel with an all-too-disturbing real life parallel to other contemporary intelligence breaches. Unfolding more than a decade before the Edward Snowden affair, this book is as relevant for history buffs as it is for the Washington policy community.

Inept American spy
By Vikki
This book should have been called Mr. 80% or The Spy Who Constantly Sabotaged Himself With His Own Ineptitude. This book detailed the life of a man who was constantly made fun of and considered stupid by his peers throughout his life so he tries to get himself out of debt and get back at everyone by stealing Top Secret information from the NRO and Interlink to sell to other countries. It does go into all the research he did on past spies and his gift for encryption and breaking codes which was really interesting. Unfortunately he kept making thoughtless mistakes like leaving the Internet browser with embassy locations up on a public computer (and not clearing the browsing history) when he thought he was being followed by the FBI and leaving sticky notes with his name on them on the info he wanted to sell to foreign governments when he wanted to remain anonymous. This case should have made the government look at how easy it was to steal top secret government info and fix the loopholes in their security to prevent it from happening in the future but of course this did not happen.

For CSS *Mastery*
By Cosmo Lee
It is difficult to say too much about this book. It is not unfair to call it a work of brilliance, and the web design community owes a debt of gratitude to the author. It is the product of such innovation, exploration, exposition, and organization that one wonders if the author suffered from obsessive-compulsive disorder to have been able to muster up the effort required to produce the work.

This is the book that allows you to master CSS. It probably should be your primary CSS resource. It is a tour de force of CSS explication and moves one beyond guessing, "WTF? Why doesn't X work?", to knowing with a great degree of understanding how CSS works.

The author endeavors to systematically cover every usable feature of CSS 2.1, has run thousands of tests to tease out all the usable formulations of properties, and the book shows examples of each usage with HTML. The term "usable" is key. He's cut out the over 40 out of 122 properties and over 250 of 600 CSS rules that are not widely implemented by the major browsers. By doing so, he spares us the miserable task of cross-browser testing by providing only patterns that are guaranteed to work with all of them (and without the need for dubious hacks).

I did notice some seemingly missing coverage. The use of dynamic pseudo selectors on non-link elements barely gets a mention, as well as the outline property. I assume the author passes over them because they were deemed unsupported by all major browsers at the time of publication (2007), however currently they are widely supported and should be included in a subsequent edition. Current browsers support many items previously deemed "unusable". And any concessions made to support the disreputable IE 6 can be mercilessly excised. Mercifully, IE 6 is no longer a "major" browser.

There are some things that are outdated, such as the advocacy of XHTML over HTML. XHTML 2 has crawled into a corner, and HTML 5 is the new heir. This doesn't detract from the overall value of the book. The stuff here is classic in its utility. The fact that it works reliably in major browsers circa 2007 means that it will work with newer browsers as well. E.g., there may be new ways to accomplish rounded corners in CSS 3, but the older techniques shown in the book will also work in current browsers. You might even prefer to use the older techniques for reasons of backward compatibility.

Other books on CSS that I've seen, even advanced books, boil down to a few of the author's favorite techniques and tricks. You get spotty coverage, consisting only of what the authors happen to want to impart. Part of the problem is that CSS really is huge. There's so much you can do, with so many settings and properties to deal with in order to accomplish things. Other books I've seen don't even attempt anything near sweeping coverage.

Not only is CSS a big topic, it is full of seeming inconsistencies and mysterious black art ways of accomplishing various tasks. Part of the problem is that outside of the Official Spec, CSS is just not adequately covered in one place. This book offers systematic and thorough coverage of CSS. The author has also taken the mass of CSS/HTML rules and behaviors and organized them into a coherent taxonomy that lends sanity to the combinatorial explosion of CSS property formulations.

Without such organization CSS can appear to be a crazy-quilt of rules with myriad maddening and confusing exceptions. This taxonomy provides you with a rational conceptual model to understand CSS design execution. And when you understand a particular design formula applies to a particular element, you also know that the behavior applies to the larger class of elements, which widens the scope and practical applicability of your understanding, while at the same time streamlining your learning.

To use a specific example, consider the box model. Any decent book on CSS describes the box model, it is central to understanding how HTML elements behave with CSS. Officially the CSS spec discusses a single but varying box model. However, this oversimplifies things to the point of confusion. The problem is that the box model can have different behaviors depending on the HTML element and the CSS property combinations. And the same properties can have different results depending on the element. So designers wind up being befuddled by what seem to be oddities and inconsistencies of CSS which are irreconcilable with the simplistic box model they've learned.

The author has synthesized the various permutations into six specific, consistent models which can be applied to all HTML elements. This is necessary because the models aren't explicitly identified in the CSS specification, only implied. This synthesis of identifying implied behaviors as explicit models is a great part of what makes the book innovative.

Once you know these models, you see the behaviors as reliable intrinsic attributes of discrete model operation, rather than as random results which you vaguely understand, may not be able to replicate or control, and can't rely upon. They resolve the confusing inconsistency of a single box model. When you understand how a behavior works, you can execute the behavior on not just a specific element, but on the class of elements to which its box model applies. Since every element adheres to some box model, your understanding serves as leverage on every other element of that class.

I'll add that box models aren't simply trivial aspects of CSS design, they are a foundational core concept which apply to all HTML elements. I've not seen any other book take such pains to explicate the details of them. The author devotes three entire chapters to the box model alone in order to establish a comprehensive framework for understanding it. What he does for the box model, he also does for positioning - identifying six explicit models; sizing - three models; tables - four models. I.e., he establishes clear, complete models of behavior which one can rely on for predictably working with the CSS area at hand.

The book takes the approach of providing an organized collection of 350 reusable formulas, or solutions - the author uses the terminology of design "patterns". The term pattern is used in the computer programming world to connote not only solutions for particular problems, but also a kind of independent modularity that allows these solutions to be mixed and matched with other patterns to build a greater whole, as with Lego pieces. In other words, these patterns are elemental solutions which can be relied upon to work by themselves, and can be combined with other patterns to form more complex composite entities.

By breaking CSS into elemental, reliable, and reusable design patterns, you wind up with an extensive tool kit containing building blocks which you can combine to produce your desired effect in a dependable and efficient manner. From simple to complex manifestations, the patterns are guaranteed to work in all major browsers while at the same time being engineered with best practices and accessibility. This means you replace the guesswork and trial and error hacking about, which so often characterizes CSS programming, with predictable and reliable behavior and techniques. Find your pattern, tweak the values to your own needs - done. And know it will work in multiple browsers. You get the immense gift of confidence in your design work execution.

Taken as a whole, these patterns cover the major aspects of CSS design. They are organized into major design topics such as positioning, styling text, aligning content, layout, tables, etc. The list is extensive. In this way the book can function as a cookbook, allowing you to reference a specific issue by topic section. It can also function as a learning text, allowing you to read the section on, say, tables, and learn all about tables.

Each individual pattern is formatted so that when the book is open it is laid out with a screen shot of the pattern as it appears in a browser on the left facing page and the explanation and relevant code on the right facing page. This makes it possible to quickly flip through the pages for ideas or access a solution visually. This consistency of layout is a major feature: while keeping your eyes set at the same place it allows you to flip the pages of the book so that you can visually scan the images for the result you seek.

So let's say you are seeking to format a table with mixed column sizes. You can go directly to the table section and flip through the pages, all the while keeping your eyes fixed at the place where the image appears, until you come across the one that matches your desired result. It's actually pleasurable to use - you'll wonder why all design books aren't formatted this way.

Many books do not service well after first reading and make for terrible references. The organization of this book make it well suited for coming back to as a reference. By organizing all information related to a specific topic in one place it becomes easy to access later. It also allows you to contrast and compare related topic behaviors in one place. This localization aids in focusing, amplifying, and mentally organizing the information.

E.g., going to the Margin section you can see how margins affect various elements, and this helps you determine which type of element you may wish to use. Contrast this with having to recall all elements to which margins apply and checking them individually in different respective places. That's a lot of rooting around, and it leads to hit and miss coverage. Instead, you can see how the property affects all elements in one place.

This organization also helps with debugging. When something is not working as expected, a common method of debugging is to take away properties one at a time until the problem disappears. When the problem disappears, you know that the issue exists with the most recently removed property.

E.g., say you've figured out that the margin is causing your stretched table to overflow its container. You can go directly to the margin section of the book to see how the margin property affects tables, as well as alternative formatting of tables, as well as alternative elements with different margin behaviors.

Compare this to searching through a different book where the author covered such a thing in some arbitrary chapter where he happened to be using the design within another context, of perhaps displaying a calendar, and it could have been in the beginning of the chapter or the middle, you don't quite remember. You have to scan all over the pages fumbling around hoping to get back to that spot. It makes for very inefficient access to information.

The author also provides extensive cross-references to the related patterns, furthering your understanding of a pattern's relationship to the contextual whole. Access is further augmented by having a detailed table of contents, index, thumb tabs, chapter outlines, uniquely naming each pattern, and a link to the companion web site where you can see each pattern live. You can tell the author has thought much about making content accessible to the reader, but also about providing not just content, but context. He's not just doing a brain dump of his expertise, leaving it up to the reader to sort things out. He has written the book with organization, context, and accessibility as key parts of its architecture.

Organization is essential to pedagogy in general. It's not simply exposure to raw expertise that counts. That expertise needs to be presented in such a way as to produce a structured, cumulative framework of knowledge, free of internal inconsistencies, so as to be maximally useful and form what we call comprehension. This book is an example of how organization of content is as important as the content itself - typically, a poorly executed aspect of many instructional books. The meta importance of content organization is that it's not just an arrangement of content, but an implied directive on how to mentally organize and think about the material.

The book's concentration is about structure, not aesthetics. The book is about manifesting what is possible from an execution perspective. It's not about how to make things pretty, it's about how things are made. While CSS may seem technical, it is necessarily so by nature because there is ultimately a machine being instructed by it. But this is a happy circumstance. Being a technical discipline means that one can access the possibilities by objective means. It takes execution out of the realm of black art and into accessible mechanics.

The book is not without its warts. It reads like a technical manual and the explanations can seem abstruse. I wish the author did a better job of explaining some things, broke with the technical style of presentation in places, and wrote about some of the topics in a more informal manner. It would have been useful for many readers if the author had done a little hand-holding for the reader rather than stick so rigidly to the technical format.

The author makes reference to "terminal nodes" without any discussion of the Document Object Model which would have given context to what's being terminated. Terms confusingly cross-pollinate and the author could have done a better job of making items more distinct and contrasted. As the author's background is computer programming this style and approach is not surprising. However, to those not inclined, it can be a challenge to parse such spartan prose, requiring one to muster up a rigorous discipline of reading.

The topic of sizing could be more adequately explained. For anyone caring to use this review as an addendum, an element's "size" is a calculated value which may or may not include all the constituents of inner-box, padding, border, and margin. So, for instance, when a stretched table with a margin overflows its container, it is because the size calculated for it didn't include the margin (Chapter 5, pg 105). This holds true for tables, floats, and inline-blocks. A discussion of what causes overflow would have been quite instructional to have as well.

I think you will get the most benefit from reading the entire book front to back. If you jump to the positioning section, it describes how positioning affects various box models - but if you skipped the box model chapters you'll be lost. At least read the box model chapters before skipping around. While the patterns are self-contained in execution, the book content is cumulative, with subsequent chapters building on previous ones.

The book may require of the reader a fair amount of determination and fortitude to get through it. At first pass, the book can be overwhelming - it's highly concentrated stuff. Although the author has accomplished a great feat in making the CSS spec accessible to mere humans, it can still be a formidable read. You may need a third, fourth, or fifth reading of the book in order to grok it all. But after the fluff of other intermediate or advanced books, the compactness and concentration of content in this book will come as a welcome change in efficiency of access. I think one would benefit from re-reading it every few months, with each pass providing further perspective and ideas, and cementing the content in one's head. The reward is that you change from guessing about CSS to knowing CSS.

I've bought Apress (the publisher) books of wildly varying degrees of quality - I was unfortunate to have purchased one which was so poorly written it required more than an hour of making corrections from its errata and a number more posting new ones - but that didn't make up for the poor overall quality.

I'm dismayed at seeing that corrections I submitted to the publisher's web site months ago have not appeared in the errata. In fact, the web site doesn't show any corrections whatsoever for the book - no errata exists. A bad sign that the book is being ignored by the publisher or maybe that they are doing a poor job of maintaining their books. Readers are not likely to help improve a book by submitting corrections if it appears that the publisher doesn't care. Thankfully, this book contains few critical errors. The book is easily worth twice its asking price, and I consider it a classic in the field. Judging by the lack of a recent edition update, I think the publisher may not appreciate the gem it has on its hands.

To summarize, if you seek to master CSS, this is the book to get. In comparison, other books in the field pale with inadequacy. It presents coverage of CSS that is systematic and comprehensive, and it provides you with a structured framework of knowledge that brings order to CSS chaos, sparing you time and effort, and allowing you to confidently manifest reliable designs that work in all major browsers. But passive readers need not apply.

Final notes, if the publisher is listening: it is a poorly titled book. Marketing-wise it has no value. A more appropriate and less impenetrable one might be "The Elements of CSS Design".

Some of the examples would have benefited from having not only the schematic browser screen shot, but a real world example. E.g., we're shown that inline or block elements can be displayed as tables, rows and cells, but why would we want to do this? A concrete example would provide some guidance. Perhaps these could be provided on the companion web site so as not to bloat the page count of the book.

With a few changes and a bit more user friendliness, this book could go from being the unsung classic in the CSS field to being THE book for CSS, in the same way that "Agile Web Development With Rails" is to Rails programming or "The C Programming Language" is to C programming.

I like this book, but it's still a little disappointing
By A Dad
I love the idea of this book - that you can reduce the complexity of CSS down to a set of patterns that theoretically can be used to resolve any layout issue. Unfortunately, it doesn't reach that lofty goal for the following reasons:

1. When you input the examples and view them in different browsers, they display differently, and don't match the display in the book.

2. Even the example pages up on the web site associated with the book do not display the same in all browsers. For example, the Display page from Chapter 4 has the p, li, table and strong elements all on the same line. Yet on some browsers the table and strong elements show up on the next line, and on others the table shows up on the next line and the strong element shows up on the line after that. Where are these carriage returns coming from, when all of these elements have the display value set to inline? The browser window width is not too small to show all the elements inline.

3. Learning and dealing with CSS and trying to make it do what you want and have it do the same in all browsers is a frustrating job of trial and error. My hope was this book would turn it into an exact science, so that when you add some CSS code, you know what your page is going to look like, no matter what browser displays it. Unfortunately, with CSS, I'm convinced you have no choice but to constantly do trial and error with every layout you write, in order to tweak it to get it right.

4. In many of the examples, the author leaves out "Nonessential rules". When I'm trying to understand the examples, I don't want any rules left out, so that I don't have to figure out why when I'm doing the examples my page doesn't look exactly as it does in the book.

Of course, I haven't seen any book on CSS able to provide a consistent set of rules that can be followed to get it to do what you want. I think this book is probably going to come as close as you're going to get.

Superb Influences
By AJ Phillips
So many of the previous reviewers have done such an excellent job of documenting this book's strengths that I'm really at a loss to do much more. So I'll take a layman's approach. I take my time looking for first-in-class texts where technology is concerned and this book doesn't disappoint in any way. I don't write reviews often but I am compelled to do so in this case as I want interested parties to know that, at least for my part, this is the finest work I've ever owned within the scope of CSS and HTML. If you happen to be a beginner, then you might be overwhelmed at first by all of the treasures found here. However, after you've found your zone, you'll be much better off for having avoided the pitfalls of costly mistakes and the bad habits you might have otherwise picked up from other text selections. Mr. Bowers' approach to the breadth and depth of CSS and HTML will undoubtedly bring your CSS/HTML prowess to "A-game" status. There's a good reason the title begins with "Pro" other than the publisher's naming schema and Mr. Bowers firmly sets and upholds that professional standard.

If you've ever felt as if all of the permutations of tags, selectors, quirks, and browser madness would never be tamed, least of all in a cohesive and logical way, then you might find that this is your stop. For intermediate and advanced parties, I am confident in my opinion that this text has made my list of top ten all-time favorites. I have owned this work for about three days at the time of this writing. I've learned more about the dark corners of CSS and HTML in that time than I have discovered on my own in a lifetime career of programming thin clients. If you're looking for lots of theory as to why things are as they are, forget about it. You might consider doing that in your downtime. Here you'll find a strong resemblance to the "recipe" format you've seen elsewhere and that formula works here as well. Within each chapter you'll not only find practical design patterns for CSS/HTML (yes, patterns!) but also neutral-language field advice about browser behaviors with regard to the element at hand. Neutrality is so refreshing to me in a world of overzealous, myopic, and fanatical views. Pro CSS/HTML Design Patterns is just the kind of book that's very likely to hold a high regard in your arsenal. Remember all those times when you were incensed by the lack of a reaction to a change you made to your CSS? Why didn't it work? Don't all elements have the property/value combination you used? Ever wonder if this element had that capability? Do you have a need to understand why one wrong move can throw off your design and how you can fix it? How about having someone decipher those tricky shorthand symbols and their meanings and effects? Get ready for the nirvana of intelligent answers to those kinds of questions. You'll find them here.
